Taylor Swift and the double standard

Featured Replies

Taylor Swift is constantly dissected — journalists call her success "just marketing," as if other artists don't rely on it too. Yet when her marketing actually works, it's treated like a crime.

Meanwhile, Bad Bunny can list his conquests with basic sex lines and get praised, Charli XCX or Billie Eilish can release chaotic, repetitive tracks that are hailed as genius. "Guess" is  talking about underwear, it repeats words in a loop with a repetitive beat and IT GETS PRAISED O.o am I in a Truman show kind of experience?
Let alone the american rappers...no one demands "Shakespearean" lyrics from any of them.

It's like a classroom where everyone's throwing desks, but the teacher scolds the one kid who quietly forgot half their homework. The whole thing would be funny if it weren't so absurd.

I think she has proven far too many times that she's a good writer so why can't she just release a light pop album without being dragged ?

ps: the fate of Ophelia is still superior to 95% of anyone else's lyrics in today's music landscape... :michael:

Well obviously people are going to criticise huge industries like Netflix and Amazon over small, local businesses. All this whinging and crying when Taylor massively outsells all of our faves many times over. If you're going to be that successful, then you need to accept you'll attract more scrutiny.

Besides that, it's not the literal approach to sex in her album's writing that's being dragged, it's the bad writing of it. Yes, someone like Bad Bunny writes very directly/literally about sex, but the writing on DTMF is good. Also, Swift's subpar writing about sex isn't only the reason for why the album is dragged.

My question was so simple

Do you agree that, for instance, "guess" lyrics are even more basic than Taylor's lowest?
If you don't agree on that you aren't  being objective so leave and apply for pitchfork:coffee2:

ps: racial? Are you even okay?

USA rappers, was I racist against eminem ( the main one who was in my mind) because I called them "unschooled" when it comes to lyrics compared to taylor? Wth I'm actually scared of this word o.o

Question for the culture:

Now that Bad Bunny, Charli XCX, and Billie Eilish, have had number ones with songs about sex, underwear, etc - can I please go back to making light pop albums with Shakespearean lyrics without being crucified or saying I'm going creatively bankrupt??????

mentioned more women than men, yet you wrote that — why? It makes no sense. It feels like 90% of people online just say whatever's on their mind instead of actually responding to what's being said.

First of all, currently no one is selling as much as Taylor. It's largely coming from the fact that she's selling album variants before the album is even out.

Now, when the album turns out to be bad and not like it was described - while the CDs are already sold - it stops being a good marketing, and starts being a scam and anti-consumer.  Hope that helps

His music is universally praised for many reasons and many people listen to it without understanding a single lyric. It's not a problem

Oh no, that's just your taste being bad. It has nothing to do with Truman show, don't worry haha

because being a good writer doesn't mean you can just stop being a good writer and expect the same praise?

1. Taylor Swift made her songwriting abilities the centre of her artistic brand, obviously more attention will be paid to it when it's very noticeably subpar.

2. Rap culture isn't a monolith and I'd advise people like you not to make insensitive comments about it when you clearly got no clue about it. Calling American rappers "unschooled" is making what you said even worse. Please just log out.

artists like kendrick have a pulitzer, kanye has written amazing songs, nicki's old music is full of clever double entendres, doja is an excellent writer. like there's so many major rap artists that are writing more poignant work than swift that never get the level of praise she does. this user lashing out against that is genuinely crazy.

As if Kendrick Lamar couldn't write the "girlboss too close to the sun" chanteuse under the table. :doc:

Taylor Swift and her stans has marketed herself as a "lyrical genius" and that every line has a secret meaning. Since Folklore she's turned away from big sounds so she isn't giving anything in that department so all we have to judge her by is lyrics.

And when she's stooped to writing about how she's "d**kmatised" and "girlboss" she's going to get rightfully dragged.

A lot of them are way more clever than whatever taylor does with her high schoolery :ahh: How are you gonna whine and be pretentious with a racial twist at the same time mama

Nobody would be talking about the lyrics if the music was good. Sadly, it isn't, so people have more time to focus on what the songs say. Nobody praises Bad Bunny for his complex lyricism, the music is just so good that it makes you not care—which cannot be said for 3/4 of TLOAS.

I believe people were, in fact, expecting her to do some big, basic bombastic pop album given the album's promo work and the fact that she was working with Max Martin again.

But she stuck to her songwriting style, which is to take journal entries and turn them into appealing songs for mass consumption. She's getting criticized for majorly dropping the ball and not living up to the expectation she set for herself. Not only that, her fans have over hyped her and spent the past two years openly making the claim that she's bigger and better than the Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Madonna. The people you all compared her to spent years exploring new sounds, writing songs about racial inequality, political injustice, war, homophobia, sexism, etc, etc, etc. They pushed themselves in their art and had something to say.

What artistic development have you honestly seen from Taylor over the past few albums? You could shuffle all the songs up, and it wouldn't make much of a difference. She's still releasing the same ol', same ol'.

Some of the criticism that Taylor Swift gets is completely valid.

(Also, please spare us with the comparisons to Bad Bunny... Taylor is getting mildly criticized for an a fairly immature album; Bad Bunny is receiving nationalistic threats from the MAGA crowd, including from government officials, with many who don't even consider him an American citizen. She'll survive a few bad reviews.)

Nobody claims Guess lyrics are deep or complex, but also nobody expected them to be. And also what a stupid ass comparison. Obviously such simple lyrics from Charli are there on purpose, whereas I'm sure Taylor thought she ate with her childish 'girlbossed too close to the sun'

Taylor paints herself as this grand poet and then serves lyrics of a rebelious teenager from 2014. girl please...

It's funny how Swift "this is just a light pop album" stans act like classical art snobs towards moder art when it comes to other pop acts, lol.

You guys claim she's such a good songwriter with deep lyrics, but when people stop to dissect her music and say it's not great instead of counter-argumenting it the best you can come up with is "oh no, stop, don't do that". This only shows you guys take her music at a more surface level than her so-called "haters".

The vulnerability Charli showcased on Brat is something Taylor Swift has never done in her music and likely never will because she cares too much about how she'll be seen. Self-deprecation, self-doubt, jealousy... those are feelings that all human beings have, but there's no space in Swift's discography because the central character has to be always seen as a victim (a sad victim, a revengeful victim, but always a victim) and this may not happen if she dares to expose her flaws.
