It's hard to compare media consumption now vs 17 years ago imo. I think she definitely used to be more controversial, daring and inspiring which back then made her more relevant in my opinion. Now that she achieved all the success, she doesn't need to prove anything, so she plays it safe. Culturally and commercially, I don't think she's considered weird anymore, she definitely has a legend status, whether some agree or not. She might be achieving peak numbers, let's be real, DWAS is a basic song for the GP compared with let's say Bad Romance.
