They/Them is album of the year, draw your own conclusions

Virgin is incredible, and my second favorite "mainstream" record of the year, but Mayhem is excellent. Seventeen tracks of the one and only original-flavor Lady Gaga stomping harder than she ever has, living up to her creative peak and then elevating it. I wouldn't be surprised if it remains my favorite album of the year. Genuinely it's flipped me back into being a full-on stan again lately, after many years of still loving and enjoying her work, but with a certain distance. That's the artist I remember - the Gaga I remember, all her facets converged but leaning most of all on the sounds of The Fame and its sessions (and that was so smart of her, there's a certain magic in that sound unlike any other). Mayhem is a triumph and even if nobody else cared that it existed it would be the perfect album for me as a fan. Even an incredible album by an incredible artist, one that pushes that artist's work forward in a substantial and compelling way, has a hard time even getting attention from me in the same conversation as an album with Abracadabra, Garden of Eden, Zombieboy, Kill For Love, etc. To say nothing of Vanish Into You, her best song :gayhemcat:

MAYHEM by a mile.

I haven't really enjoyed a Lorde song, let alone a whole album, since her Melodrama era.

Virgin and it's not even close. 🩻 Talking about ovulation, birth control, drugs, intimacy, eating disorders, gender roles, sex, being brutally honest about life & bodies etc are not the same as pulling an abracadabra magic. One is rooted in raw human experience & the other one leans on pop theatrics & Michael Jackson/Taylor Swift/oldga imitations etc. Of course I love both projects but Lorde has always been in a league of her own, like one is an altpop masterpiece and other one is a pop masterpiece after all. But for some reason if you had to put them side by side, Lorde stomps. Virgin is also more timeless and has more replay value definitely. Way better cover art too (not even comparable).

Mayhem is the best album of the year so it would win against any album that came out this year it's very simple :alexz3:

Only one of them has Disease on it, so that one

It sucks how Virgin was released post-Solar Power. The album is excellent, and the vast majority who were disappointed would be stanning hard if it was released after Melodrama.

I really wanted to love Lorde's because it tackles a lot of unique topics but I couldn't get into it on first listen. It's the first album ever I listened from her though, and it wasn't a unpleasant experience at all. I'll go with MAYHEM at least as long as Virgin doesn't click for me.

One re-heats the nachos but also sees the artist pushing forward and experimenting with new sounds and textures almost entirely successfully. The other re-heats the nachos to varying degrees of success. I'll let y'all judge for yourselves which is which.
