Lorde - 'Virgin'

Featured Replies

It's great. Definitely better than "Solar Power" in terms of being more sonically interesting. "What Was That" remains best produced track on the album, along with "David". When it goes "weird" it's the best - p*ssy sample on "Current Affairs", "Clearblue", pulsating synth on "Hammer", I think this album could have benefited from being more experimental and avant-guard. The one that absolutely destroyed me and am afraid of overplaying is "Man of the Year". I think it's the best song Lorde has ever written, it's gut-wrenching, like this blurry, intense moment of enjoying the painful realisation of your own aloneness. Idk, but this track blew me away. "Favourite Daughter" had some cute lyrics, but was absolutely bland melodically and sadly, the baby was deleted forever. Another one I'm on the verge of deleting is "If She Could See Me Now" because of the cringe lyrics, but I'd hate to have to listen to a 9-track album.

Tips & tricks: try listening to "Broken Glass" right after "What Was That".

ijbol remember when Solar Power had no CD bc of her climate activism - she said F the planet for this album, we cheered!

  • new track in 3 days.

  • I believe Melodrama remains her magnum opus, but Virgin sounds absolutely incredible. It's the Lorde we know, yet it also feels incredibly refreshing. In Hammer, she mentioned, "I might be born again,

okay upon second listen she (they?) got me :jonny5: current affairs really the only song I can't really connect with (the pamela lyric really turns me off) but shapeshifter and david are career highlights

Making my first ATRL post to say that I am increasingly obsessed with this record. My current top 3: Favourite Daughter, If She Could See Me Now, Broken Glass.

First impression is a little underwhelming. Nothing really grabbed my attention but I know more listens will do me better

I love this a lot more than i thought i would. the singles are the weakest songs :rip:

This album in Dolby Atmos is HEAVENLY IM TELLING YOU

Pitchfork will give this a 6 or BNM'ed with an 8.7. Nothing in the middle. Place your bets.

This entire album makes me want to cry. The more I listen and discover certain lyrics... Lorde, why did you have to destroy me like this? :chick3:

This is either her best or second-best album. Only time will tell.

This was really good I-

We need another album by the next year and with the sound like her Take Me to the River version :chick1:

I wish Spotify would allow you to use custom/alternate album covers. I hate that hideous album cover and having to look at it whenever I stream this lol.

Great album anyway.

I think slightly above SP's score- 7.0 or just shy of 8. The initial reaction with singles was too lukewarm to turn into complete praise.

this was an ok on the first listen but wow its growing

not sure whether she's SP/Melo level at the moment. but each track is starting to hit

Broken Glass is a hit in the making now cmon now! Lights gave us Piranha this year, Gaga gave us Perfect Celebrity, Marina gave us Everybody Knows I'm Sad, and Lorde gave us motherf*cking Broken Glass :jonny5: what a year for pop music, for real!!

Not you wanting to delete if she could see me now when it's obviously the best song on the whole project …

idk I was thinking 8.2 or 8.3, them pulling a fast one on us like they did with That! Feels Good! or Eusexua where they don't give the singles BNT but they end up loving the album as a whole :ryan2:

I'm guessing a high 6 with them constantly comparing it to Melodrama and complaining about the themes and abrupt endings of songs.

Just had my first listen after getting out of the sweltering heat of Barcelona, so too early for in depth comments, just wanted to drop by to say she did it again. A triumph, perfect marriage of the themes and lyrics with the sound.

A debut that rivals Pure Heroine. :jonnycat:
