I felt like it really was missing a lot of the things that I love about her work, swapping them out for a persona and themes I don’t care about for half the album (even though I know it was an intentional act) and for harsh, artificial synths all over the place. It was cold, it was constructed entirely around this version of her that didn’t exist before the 2016 ordeal, and it was the opposite of the genre direction I wanted. On a technical level, though, it was objectively good, and it was still Taylor, so I never hated it.

 

If you look at the fans who are more pop-oriented and who started to like her or stan or whatever in like the 1989 era, or even during Reputation itself because they’re younger and that’s just what was out when they became more aware of her, they tend to like it a lot more. People who joined the club during Lover tend to like it a lot more, too. That’s not to say older fans never do - I’ve seen some that absolutely adore Reputation. But I really wonder if a huge part of it is just older versus younger, one genre versus another.

Yeah that’s fair. I became a stan at 1989 release, so I fall into that pool you’re talking about. But I didn’t stan because of 1989, that album just made me want to explore her discography because I only knew her singles and the 1989 deep cuts were so great. 
 

After hearing Red (I went backwards) I decided to stan, and 1989 was near the bottom of my rankings back then too after I had listened to all of them. 
 

So I’m not sure what camp I fit into, but it’s a bit of both

And that’s fine too, because nothing is black and white in life except that everyone who likes Red is a good person! 

 

 

I'm not a big fan of Reputation. But for me it's because half of the album doesn't feel like Taylor Swift. Songs like Look What You Made Me Do, Ready For It, I Did Something Bad, End Game have absolutely no life in them. They are not bad per say, they can even be pretty catchy, but for once those songs could have been sung by anyone and it would have work. Basically, I wouldn't skip these if they came on shuffle, but if I am specifically choosing to listen to Taylor Swift, I won't put these song on. 

Then there's Gorgeous, which is horrible. I saw a video on youtube which said that none of its piece match together, and that's how I feel. Add to that the terrible lyrics (like the face rhyming with face mentioned earlier), and you have a terrible song.

 

And there's only a few songs that I consider major: Don't Blame Me, So It Goes..., Dancing With Our Hands Tied and Gateway Car. The rest is good, but not great.

 

Lover kinda have the same problem for me, there are too much "good but not great" songs on it, with a few songs that are mediocre (ME!, YNTCD). But just like Reputation, it misses more highlights, as I only consider MA&THP, Cruel Summer, DBATC and False God to be highlights. 

 

That's why these two are my least favorite albums from her. She just can do so much better (evermore, folklore, Red, Speak Now and even 1989 are miles better than these too).

Mine could have been a Fearless Gold Edition track and people wouldn’t have noticed. Even The Story of Us would have served a better purpose as bad as it is. And if they wanted to convey a more mature approach, Back to December and Ours were right there. Speak Now was just a mismanaged concept that honestly I’m glad that since then she made her point continuously about sticking to a vision that made sense and wasn’t just Scott deciding things just because.

Mine is a really good song though . At that point it was furthering her already existing brand and that's not necessarily a bad thing, you need to establish yourself before you start to evolve. The good thing about Taylor is that ther sonical evolution was  very gradual, never jarring so she didn't alienate her fanbase.

Mine as the lead single makes a perfect sense, it's literally the only song can appeal for both pop and country radio.

Mine would be fine as a single, but Last Kiss deserves a video!

I started paying attention to Taylor on the Fearless era because of Love Story and YBWM but I didn’t stan until Red came out. 

 

Having said that, I really love reputation. It still is one of the best comebacks I’ve ever seen in any MPG career. It had everything I could’ve asked for, the LWYMMD video was perfect, the sound was everything I wanted at the time 

 

It doesn’t rank on top 3 of her albums because I stan folkmore, red and 1989 more, but it sure is close to it.

I can't really picture a visual for LK...maybe some slow dancing with a guy in a big ballroom and then somehow it goes sad...but it's the kind of song that is difficult to write a video treatment for

I had this vision of something with scenes of her going through her ex’s things - like vinyls, postcards, letters, etc - interspersed with flashback scenes to their relationship, culminating two scenes - both their best memory and also their breakup - for the bridge. The last chorus from 4:43 on would start with a shot of her literally lying on the floor in an old hoodie or something of his, surrounded by keepsakes, just slowly zooming out. Maybe a couple more flashbacks or something through the end of the track, but that last “so I’ll go” at that moment starts out so tender and quiet that I think it demands a somber moment like that.

 

Also the floor is dark, old hardwood because aesthetic

I think Mine made a lot of sense as the lead single for Speak Now because it’s very similar to Love Story in terms of the storybeats it hits (meeting to falling in love to a proposal), but it replaces the “juvenile” fairytale imagery with “mature” real world details instead. The statement was just “I’ve grown up and I’m a young woman now.”

 

That said, I think Sparks Fly would’ve been the lead single if not for the fact that the live performance audio was already so popular with the fandom. They probably thought that the fact that it was so well known would have hindered its performance as a lead single, but I think that was a miscalculation. The stans loved the song and would have shown up in a big way to support it, and noting all the changes between the live performance and studio version would’ve driven quite a bit of discourse. It would’ve been a bigger crossover hit as well.

I just wish she was more creative with her target variants and didn't just let them print red ones just because. I bought the red FearlessTV one and it just clashes so bad with the yellow/gold of the album cover.
