Im not lying when I say that they're genuinely the most well-rounded bg we have in kpop today and I don't say that for any other group, not even my own faves. And I'm glad people actually recognize that, it's just surprising when someone does because they're so underrated as artists and musicians.

This isn't just a problem for K-pop groups - they ruin Beyonce, Britney, etc. performances most of the time at awards shows. 
 

I wish the West were like K-pop and record labels sent dedicated video staff for performances.

Well... The camera work for the year-end gayos are a Hot Mess too so I wouldn't say it's specifically a Western media thing, though it definitely doesn't help, yeah.

 

But the lighting tho. I think it's the most fundamental problem wrt empty/awkward looking stages, because there are plenty of stationary whole-stage fancams that don't look empty af.

 

 

Note the extended periods where its mostly black (0:54, 1:54, etc.), and the rest of the stage fades away into the darkness, so that the focus is entirely on the group.

 

 

Whereas for billboard, the spotlights are constantly moving around throughout the entire performance, which is 1. Distracting from the dance and 2. Calling attention to empty space. Sometimes less is more.
