My initial thoughts are that it's mainly an issue with the style of lighting/staging for the event (and maybe even the US in general). It's too brightly/uniformly lit, so all the empty space on the stage is always visible. Stages in Korea tend to have more contrast and shadows (+props and other background gimmicks). Would explain why kpop performances mostly look terrible there.
