With that said ,they need to stop trying to mimic the Future Nostalgia era ,give this era its own identity, otherwise she will underperform badly .

I don't think anything went wrong so far but I agree with this. There's nothing psychedelic about Houdini sans the outro (love Houdini though, one of my fav 2023 songs). And the Training Season snippet is giving ordinary pop song

the album is not even out yet, you’ve got to be ******* kidding me.

Answering the thread, her team is trying to repeat the FN promo cycle and the music itself isn't too far off from FN. There's nothing innovative about it so at the end of the day, she mostly has the support from her main markets (Europe). She's doing... fine

Houdini is a moderate hit and anyone who thinks otherwise isn´t being objective. It gets 2.5M daily streams consistently. Is it a smash? No. Is it holding on quite well, especially in Europe? Absolutely.

 

 

The overdramatic. Yes, Houdini came out not in a smart moment of the year and that's (probably) the reason why she didn't do big live promotion. 

Let's wait for another single and the album.

it surpassed 200M today and it only came out around 2 months ago. its not SMASH hit numbers but its doing fairly well. thats not tanking. 

We’ve gotten 1 single, no confirmed release date and the haters are already perched, so I’d have to say absolutely nothing!

There are “hit” songs (acc to ATRL) that reached the top 10 on that local chart in the US and barely have 500M streams.

 

O.P: The problem is that we don't have a release date.

I feel like there's a lack of vision compared to the Future Nostalgia era. That psychedelic-kaleidoscope thing was weird. It goes well for alt artists like tame impala but i think she needs a better concept-vision. A more mainstream one. Houdini was clearly very weak and the video cheap. Not a good comeback.  Now i wonder if she can recover or this is her witness era.  Hope she's able to strike lightning with a new song.

If i were Dua i would have moved to a more Urban-Dance R&B-Tropical-Dancehall-Nelly Furtado-Rihanna direction. Something sexier. Something sunnier-sunset like but very glamorous

Too early to say but I don’t think the “more of the same” approach works for her. I get that this is her signature sound now but she doesn’t really have a strong enough identity yet to stand firm in it and keep the GP’s attention. It’s just more samey dance pop and I don’t think that’s gonna have impact for her considering for most of the GP, they see this as her second era. 
 

I’m not trashing the music, just the nature of the commercial pop industry.

This too, like let the music speak. I’m not getting psychedelic, I’m getting more mature version of FN. I hear class and champagne.

They just didn’t handle Houdini well at all. And I think it’s clear to everyone it was a last minute lead single decision, which shouldn’t have been done imo.

 

Will be interesting to see what happens after the Grammys performance. Houdini just can’t seem to take off in the US. But maybe the Grammys will give it one last nice push.

The era is cursed. From the last minute switch of the lead singles. The high budget Training Season video getting scrapped. 
 

The stars aligned for her with FN, they fell apart for her this time around. She should rush through the era. Take a vacation, and come back with something more groundbreaking.

This entire album is depending on training season doing better than houdini and building up hype otherwise she'll be lucky to spend 5 weeks in the top 10... giving up on houdini promo so dtn could have a chance at award season might be the worst decision in her entire career

ATRL always so out of touch with reality
