When the grammy voters voted for nominations, DWAS was big of course, but the full picture of HOW truly massive was not fully pictured. It has since broken the fastest song to reach 1 billion streams, gone #1 for 5+ weeks, and become one of the biggest hits of the decade both in the US and WW. The Grammys LOVE this type of record breaking success. (look at midnights/25 for example). When nominations were voted on it looked similar in size to other big hits of the year, but now it's ahead in nearly every metric.
