Anyone one with sense knows (most) their favs are gonna debut lower and numbers keep going down so it's best not to try it

Can anyone explain to me why numbers are dropping the way they are for everyone? Is it because the industry isn't adapting quickly enough and adjusting streaming equivalents or because people aren't listening to music as much?

From my understanding:

- a lot of stores that used to sell CDs dont anymore (many Walmarts, all the Best Buy etc…) CD sales were already starting to collapse, so when they saw a decline they just abandoned them. At one point Walmart was the biggest music retailer in the world.

- people stream catalog songs more than new songs

- I personally think billboard’s way of counting streams is a bit aggressive. Kendrick Lamar got 350M streams and that didn’t even translate to 300K opening week

- all the big artists are old, a factor in opening sales dwindling. 

 

I love the Kelis sample. It takes ENERGY to the next level.  It was worth the drama.

iirc, the new merch and bundle rules in mid-2020 were the turning point. See: Folklore vs. Evermore, After Hours vs. Dawn FM, TUN vs. Positions, 25 vs. 30. Obviously, there are other factors at play, but there's a pretty clear before and after when it comes to first-week numbers.
