FLAallday is not the first user to burst in here complaining about the complaints, which is fine. The problem is they all do that every other day and they do it disgustingly and abrasively. Reading the complaints is honestly more fun than reading insults from strangers, all because we want to see the greatest performer of all time perform and the most awarded VMAs artist to drop a video. The frustration is warranted. Just because you have more patience than the rest of us doesn’t make you a better fan. We are all in this hell hole website together.

It definitely wasn't universal, but the excitement and praise definitely overrode any critique.

Like you said though, it's never that serious. And we (as stans) will always pow wow. It's the switch-ups that confuse me, but I guess it's baked into stan culture. 

Spirit was not acclaimed amongst Hive members, let's not rewrite history. Be Alive was even more hated. 

The people who love both songs then, still love it now. 

 

The Hive did like the fact that Spirit showed her vocals though, A LOT. 

 

I personally think Otherside would have worked better in the film, the moment he loses his father and he stumbles down would have been perfect for Otherside.

Listening to Rih's Black Panther theme and these other girls and guys just aren't delivering to the standard Bey is. Not vocally. Not sonically. Not anything. And I say this as someone who actually loves Rih. 

 

IMO, 98-Out really triggered the Hive and made them treat the track like a discarded problem child. 

 

For me, it's one of those real banner moments that make me so annoyed by stan culture sometimes. Way too often quality is measured by a) whether a song sounds like it'll be a braggable hit. A receipt in later stan war and b) whether or not it ends up becoming a hit or not. 

 

Maybe it was release night hype, but I will NEVER forget how in love the Hive were when it dropped. "OMG, the key change"..."Best Bey ballad in YEARS"..."instant soundtrack classic". 98-out happened and the very same people (like very same) slam it. I was....flabbergasted lol. 

 

As a lover of big, bellowing, and blaring Bey, it's still one of her best ballads IMO. And very much is perfect for The Lion King. Good enough to sit alongside the classic material on the original soundtrack. 

 

 

Spirit was and always will be a great song especially for what it is. I wouldn’t want it on an album of hers but as a soundtrack song for a kids movie it was great.

I've never cared for Spirit outside of the acapella gospel version at the end of Black Is King. Now THAT is a great rendition of the sing.

I loved spirit the moment I first heard the song. The visual really elevated it too.

Because it is. It's arguably the worst ballad of her career. The song goes nowhere, and relies on harmonies to carry it, but even they don't deliver. I would have definitely loved it more had she utilized her head voice as opposed to singing in a low Alto the entire time.

 

Played it when it dropped and promptly left it in the dust.

 

I'm not gonna lie, after listening to Be Alive I was a little scared when Break My Soul was announced. All the anxiety just for Beyoncé to drop the record everyone was asking for

Verses feel kind of classic, cliche but fitting... then it feels like the chorus is going to soar but its kind of heavy, the 808s feel like an attempt to make it contemporary or urban, the runs on  "spirit" kind of distracting, and it lacks a warm melody. The post chorus hits the market though.

 

Otherside/Bigger are much better imo 

Funny enough Be Alive was my 2nd most played song in 2021 despite being released late. 

It snuck up on me. I still like it but the beat drop behind can be exhausting. And shouldn't have been heard all throughout the song. 

 

I believe the opening line and its delivery are one of the best amongst her ballads. The "it feels so good to be alive" is euphoric. Sadly it does not soar or build to a bigger moment and would be more enjoyable without that loud incessant "tum" "tum" in the back. 

The humming at the beginning of Lift me Up gave me Spirit vibes. I like both songs. 

 

Lift me up is better in my opinion because it's more of a haunting/somber ballad.  I could hear Tems all over the track.

What exactly is fun about calling Beyoncé dumb(which happens a lot in here through different verbiage)?  And correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t you the same girl who theorized she hadn’t dropped the visuals bc you thought she looked fat?  I could be mistaken as this was like 2 months ago but talk about disgusting…

 

Some of you just get off on yourselves having these extreme hot takes you think you’re entitled to bc you consider yourself a fan, but it’s honestly gross and exactly the reason in my original post I called those type of users bottom of the barrel ass fans. It wasn’t meant to offend anyone it didn’t apply to so if you’re up in arms over it, that says everything. 
 

For those of us who are able to enjoy the album for what it is and has been thus far and will continue to manifest to be…it feels so good to be alive, doesn’t it?

 

Anyway, I’m over this back and forth…reminder that the placement of Energy on the album is one of the most perfectly calculated and nuanced decisions she has ever made in her catalogue. 

I liked (not loved) Spirit instantly and loathed Be Aloser instantly. My opinions have not changed.

I do understand why Bigger was not a contender to be in the movie. It's quite personal. 

 

The Gift had really strong songs. Sadly and thankfully, her repertoire grew so much, I am not sure any of them will get a performance. 

Y’all want fans to just be yes man and accept whatever. How are artists supposed to grow if all they hear from fans is “yaaas queen” to everything? That’s why Nicki acts the way she does.There’s nothing wrong with saying Beyoncé is a great artist but probably not the best A&R and should relinquish some control when it comes to promo.  And complaining about the critique is just as annoying. 
 

 The talk of overexposure only seems to be a concern for Beyoncé because other artists who are just as big have been doing re releases with full promo in the media, new albums, and the only result is they are getting more popular, more streams, more hits lol. If cancel culture isn’t real neither is overexposure. 

Spirit is the only song on The Gift that fits the part of the movie they slated it to be in, Simba’s “march” back home to save the pride lands. No other song on the album matches that vibe.

 

Although, I’m pretty sure I read that originally Spirit was supposed to be for end-credits, but the director decided to add it to that scene. A mistake in my opinion, because the 1 minute edit of the song they presented in the scene was just terrible. Letting it play in full at the conclusion of the story would’ve worked much better.
