First of all this is not a hate thread. I personally appreciate Selena Gomez as a person and as an artist.

Selena has released 7 albums: 3 as "Selena Gomez & The Scene", 3 solo studio albums and 1 in collaboration with Benny Blanco. Her solo career was launched in 2013 with Stars Dance which really made her famous worldwide. She has had many hits since, she is very famous and the general public likes her.

As I was on Kworb I noticed that her streams are particularly low for someone who was so popular and got many hits during the streaming era.

Her 4 daily most streamed songs are all songs that do not belong to her catalog and on which she is simply featured. Her own most streamed song daily is Good For You with 330k streams.

Here are some of her own catalog's streams:

It feels surprisingly disappointing if we compare her to many of her peers in my humble opinion. I know y'all enjoy shading her singing skills but letting that aside, why isn't her own music receiving more love ? Gen Z knows her well, they know her singles and enjoyed her.

cause Selena is not known for her music anymore. Even her classics don't feel as big as her peers' classics. Her not being able to sing, has done damage to her singing career so now we all just know her as a celebrity/sometimes actress who does music here and there but it's never nothing groundbreaking.

she always made music on the side as an accessory to being an influencer/mental health activist/celebrity whatever.

people don't really take her music seriously. she's just good for a few bops. everyone's aware she's talentless as a singer/"artist", so there's not much investment from anyone, except some gays, because gays will stan literally any girl on a beat.

Selena's appeal during her peak focused around how much prettier she was than her peers and a polished feel to her sound (Revival is expensive restaurant fodder).

But due to her lupus, botched surgeries, and general aging, she doesn't meet Gen Alpha beauty standards (who lean even more into this than Gen Z). Add on top that her output is sporadic and out of touch with trends, you get this. Random pockets of nostalgia success but mostly forgotten since the artist has no appeal or effort pushing it.

Bad Liar deserves more

She doesn't put any efforts on music and so her label /team (like the low playlisting of Revival songs: https://atrl.net/forums/topic/401704-spotify-playlist-reach-of-female-artists-albums-their-daily-streams/)

Bad Liar deserves more streams and I'm surprised Hands To Myself hasn't gone viral yet (like for example People You Know, Love you like a love song, etc)

She has bops, but we don't take her seriously as an artist

And as an actress too, for that matter

Those Revival numbers aren't bad at all imo…it's over a decade old and there were many much bigger singles released that year. Lose You to Love Me pulls decent numbers too.

Because she's atrocious as an artist

I never understood the appeal. She can't sing and has zero artistry. She's just an image created by producers.

Now she's seen as a social media celebrity by GP, no one cares about her music.

she only had one pop girl era and everything fell apart after that. yes, she has released music since then but her career as a musician has been completely sidelined since Rare dropped (and before that too). it's crazy that Rare even belongs to this decade, it feels like her popstar career ended a LONG time ago.

Ojos Tristes and Lose You To Love Me are both in the OP list, but they do better than most of them.

She's doing great considering singing is just one part of her career.

Also great for someone with her level of vocal ability, even though she does have a pleasant tone.

the last time she felt like an important popstar was Revival. people have moved on since then

Shes a celebrity, not a singer/artist

She's not a legitimate artist, but she also doesn't care enough to just be a pop star/hitmaker with a good ear. She always treated music like it was a means to an end, and that eventually is able to be picked up on by listeners even if you're giving them the occasional bop or two. It also doesn't help that some of her biggest, most recognizable hits were #rihjects and/or DJ collabs.

She was always just there. Noting she does is essential. Her music has no artistry or personality, and she will be forgotten as an artist. She's an influencer/celebrity first and foremost.

It's funny this site loves to hype up Revival as some sort of moment but in real time it was forgettable radio fodder. Selena just got more credit for it because the bars in hell for her. Ironic how 2015/2016 is having a revival and Revival isn't getting the same treatment as Anti, Dangerous Woman, Views, Starboy, blonde, 24k Magic, Purpose, etc. She's just not taken seriously as a musician and artist.

Because she only has 2 global smashes (LYLALS and WDTA).

Why did Love On flop

I actually think her music career could have continued on it's trajectory if she had stuck with the moody mid-tempo sound she had on songs like GFY, Fetish, Heart Wants, etc. That could have been her niche.
