Should Apple buy Spotify/UMG?

Featured Replies

This thread is for the finance girlies of Atrl not consumers, from a business perspective :

Apple Music has been quite stagnant and basically peaked in streams pre 2020. The best way for Apple to get around this would be buying Spotify and merging it with Apple Music. This would instantly increase their subscriber base and eliminate the competition . Only downside would be the android users and the free tier which Apple would not want .

The other option would be to buy UMG and make all their artists exclusive to Apple Music . imagine Taylor Swift, Ariana etc being only there ,it would definitely increase their subscribers.

Which one should they do ? celestial5

HELL NO, they'd be a complete monopoly if this ever happened and we do not need a monopoly in streaming.

This is purely business, nothing to do with whether it benefits customers or not. As long as it benefits Apple I think they should do it

I believe artist exclusivity will never happen, as the ones who'll suffer from this would be the artists themselves and their numbers. Look at Tidal when it first launched.

fadple music is only one of their products and doing great for them as part of their ecosystem, they don't want or need spotify

and taylor would never sell umg, that's her company

True they could easily survive without it .

Miss (soon to be Mrs) Swift is a capitalist, all they'd have to do is throw a billion or so at her and she'd agree

The only monopolies I need are the "multiplayer economics-themed board game" and the Ariana x Victoria collab. Let there be competition.

If you owned a business like theirs wouldn't you want to eliminate the competition? At all costs ?

We learn about sexism in school and that's still going on, are we just supposed to encourage that too we

This is a case like Microsoft buying Apple in early 2000s when they haved monopole with Windows, European Union and Ameircan Anti-trust will block it.

From a business perspective yes

From a moral one no, we need to avoid monopolies

For artists it would be probably good

Spotify has been the worst that has happened to musicians in the last decades, at the point were we will probably start seeing a massive uptick of physical sales for the industry to survive

It's not a monopoly cos there's still

Deezer

Tidal (good luck with that one)

Qobuz

And then there's the more regional exclusive services like Korea's "Bugs!" service

So there would be a monopoly cause that competition…

On top of obvious monopoly concerns I'd rather not risk ruining Apple Music by integrating Spotify into it, even if Spotify's recommendation algorithm is better

If that were to happen I would move over to Qobuz

I would go to Deezer.
