Name a bigger downfall than Lizzo's

Featured Replies

Sorry if I've been talking a lot about Lizzo's downfall. I don't really hate her, but I just can't fathom how one of the biggest pop stars at her peak now can't even move at least 1k units of her new album in its second week. Like how is that possible? Can you think of anyone with a bigger downfall than that?

I don't think anyone has a bigger downfall. Not even Shawn Mendes going from a #1 album to #26-OUT or The Album Unchartable were as bad as that.

Carly Rae Jepsen

At least Emotion went top 20 and had a platinum top 40 lead.

Lizzo's album failed to chart on billboard 200. Never seen a bigger downfall than this, she literally won ROTY a couple of years ago.

Maybe I'm being ignorant but Lizzo never felt that big to me? She had a cute moment in 2019 with Truth Hurts and Good As Hell but that didn't seem to last much and then her single with Cardi flopped. She got lucky with TikTok giving her a hit with ADT but even that didn't seem to help the album to have that much longevitybird

Was she ever really "one of the biggest pop stars" though? Truth Hurts was a smash but very local, Good As Hell was a cute hit that was simply riding off its coattails, Rumors debuted high as her first major release since her peak but then bombed because no one actually liked it, and then she was naturally fading away until About Damn Time was saved by TikTok. She always kind of gave one era wonder, I feel like she actually outlasted the path she was headed for. michael

CRJ became a cult classic basically, can't say the same about Lizzo but let's see.

But I don't think in this day and age a bigger fall.

Not us basically saying the same thing but written differently. deadbanana2

Was Lizzo ever really that impactful though? At her "peak" she only had like 2 hits. Even Meghan Trainor has had more commercial dominance than Lizzo

That tells you how much the grammies can be a joke. Giving ROTY to LIZZO

Lizzo deserved it. Lizzo has more hits than Carly Rae Jepsen.

Lizzo has 2 top 5 albums and she has only flopped once so far. Her last hit was less than 4 years ago. She still has a fighting chance.

Even Truth hurts wasn't that big on streaming, Radio helped it stay at #1. Only 1.09 billion streams for 7 weeks chart topper pancake

As it was should've won, that was the Record of the year (2022)

Has there ever been an artist that reached Lizzo's level of success flop this hard with an album release?

Did Iggy Azalea even flop this hard?

It's partially her label's fault. I can't believe they greenlit an album release with no hype or successful single. Meanwhile you get artists blocked from releasing an album for not having a Top 10 Hot 100 hit.

Music industry is so strange sometimes.

I think the music industry exec that spoke with Rolling Stone hit the nail on the head when they said she never really had a core, dedicated fan base and was just getting hits built off an initial viral moment that happened on TikTok in 2019. This viral moment lead people to discover her and other songs on the album, and they became hits on streaming and radio.

After this, she relied on hype from her hits and breakthrough when she released new material, which worked for a limited period. After the controversy that happened with her, the hype and interest was completely lost with the general public and she didn't have a core, dedicated fanbase to catch her.

Some of the other artists I've seen mentioned have some sort of a fan base, even if small, to support their new projects and help them chart on the BB 200. Many artists like CRJ, Kim Petras, Ava Max, Bebe, etc. developed a cult following and small fanbase thanks to social media, and they support the new projects. Lizzo is pretty much at a point with no fan base and no general public support. A very tough situation to be in.

The United States of America.

She was a viral one hit fad wonder who managed to be one of the only pandemic releases with fake praise and some plus sized fans. She lasted longer than expected tbh.
