the biggest songwriter/producer in modern pop, I would expect the value to be in the billion mark

It's probably worth a lot less than some may have expected because there's a lot of work they've done for which they don't have exclusive or complete rights. As far as I understand it, Taylor's work with them, for example, is still unusable to the new owners in various business scenarios if she says no, given her ownership of her masters and her publishing stake as a songwriter.

It's basically a hobby of rich people now

I don't think anyone is really profiting but those massive firms

What's the point of holding onto music that no longer brings coin due to streaming and natural decrease in sales over time? This is like cashing out their 401k at retirement age. Their songs are massive but they won't be massive forever. They won't be here 100 years from now so they might as well maximize profit while they can.

article says they are selling publishing rights so probably still keeping writing ones. going by style for example, it has million publishers so their part is pretty small.
