Rate Your Music (RYM) is a site where people can rate songs, albums, music videos, compilations, etc. (plus movies). It has charts, genre tagging and it's also used by a lot of people to discover new music. Does anyone here have an account there? What do you think of the site and its members?

I like it a little less since I got banned from voting genres but I still use it daily

I like checking rym and AlbumoftheYear from time to time. I like reading what others say more than rating. And I like going through user lists for recommendations

miles better than AOTY

I think its performative lowkey. I find it much more interesting when people say their favorite album is an album like American Life or The Fame or something. Not some boring rym acclaimed album the people on there insist on.

They are a lil too harsh on everything for my taste. A score of 3.5/5 is pretty excellent in there and I just can't really feel compelled to check something with that kind of "recommendation". But ye, checking their scores for atrl faves feels like walking on broken glass.

Like to check their reviews. I think reviews should be stored forever

I'm not as active there as I used to be but I think it's a great resource for discovering new music / getting into artists' discographies.

I've seen some criticism about their userbase but generally people there are more open-minded than most atrlers, who often dismiss anything that isn't mainstream pop/with female vocals. Just my observation though.

The writing on there is a bit rough to read and genre tags suck but, the site is alright for ratings its like a more pretentious letterbox.

Eh, I really don't care about the opinions of other people regarding music and the arts, in general. The only rating I care about is my own.

quite hard to use for starter and where's to navigate the site, there's too many albums all at once when you begin to browse. not very useful for tiktok people that cater to AOTY but also more trolls and lunatic in RYM. after that, this forum/AOTY or tiktok viral clips might be more appropriate for everyone unless you want to discover music.

Pretentious and overly critical, but actually a good source for making sure your catalog for a particular artist is totally complete. I've relied on them a lot in building my Oklou library because they have pages for most of her really obscure SoundCloud era **** and her other usernames and associated acts there.

Unfortunately, RYM is a very misogynistic music rating. Only Björk and Kate Bush appears in the best albuns of the all time, even so, is very superior to AOTY who is a lot of stans

Best music site. The functionality is undefeated,just wish more people used it. There aren't enough ratings.

Never used it I think I only did once to rate an Allday album back in the days

I think I used the one what lastfm is connected with.

I prefer albumoftheyear.

Better than Fart of the Year

I think the 2002'd interface is a blessing somehow. After using it for eight years I'm less concerned with the ratings themselves and mostly use it as a database. And now you can click the red button for Glitchwave to do the same thing for video games. Of course there are plenty of insufferable users but they're easy to ignore.

I have been using it more for the last 3 years or so. I like it because it's a way for me to discover new music even though I'm not a fan of their 5-star score system (AOTY is better in that regard). Their userbase seems fine for the most part? I don't engage much with them tho.

Overall, I enjoy it. I use it like Letterboxd as more of an "archive" of things I've watched (listened to in RYM's case). I don't mind having to give albums a score to do so, though I used to put more thought & weight into that aspect. I like using it as my ongoing "Best of [Year]" list so that I can rank albums as they come out instead of struggling to do it in November/December. I agree that the old interface works in its favor.

Pretty good spot to find new recommendations, but I have so many albums/musicians I have on a list that I need to listen to, alongside keeping up with new releases, I don't think I'll need to check out new recommendations any time too soon.

However, since the horrendous comments from R&B-hating users on Erika de Casier's Sensational back in 2021/22, I pretty much never look at comments sections anymore

A lot of RYMs core/initial audience is repulsed by R&B that isn't 60s/70s soul (Rockism liked it) or Alternative R&B (also boosted by Rockism)
