It is thanks to Madonna's gargantuan success that labels started pushing their female artists from the get-go but before that it was pretty uncommon for a debut single to hit

I mean, she grew it into a Dance Chart hit out of thin air, unsigned initially and bringing a cassette tape to clubs in hopes DJs would play it.

Anyone can be a main pop girl or flop given the day.
