It absolutely would've hit #1 if it had a normal wide release rip

100%! It missed over a day of tracking, but Love Yourself by Bieber, although being #1 on radio that week, didn't reach the top of song sales and streaming that week. Just a normal YouTube/digital services drop would have ensured a #1 debut with all the noise surrounding that song.

Whether or not it's a classic, no lead singer has yet do do such a bold move as: Surprise drop a political music video Perform it at the Super Bowl the next day Give it away for free Not send it to

the way versions and screenshots of these tweets go viral every year, I'd say yes

Maybe a cult classic among Bey's fanbase ? But I genuinely don't think I have ever heard it irl and it flopped in my country

Not at all. I couldnt name a single lyrics tbh.

To be fair, it was overshadowed by the album much like many of Taylor's first singles that aren't considered big hits.

I don't think so but that's her own fault, the whole Tidal fiasco and the song being only available there when the streaming era was taking over basically killed it.

the release strategy kinda stopped it from being "a classic" but it was "a moment"

hot sauce in my bag swag cannot be forgotten, that's a you issue

I don't think I ever heard it.

I do remember hearing of it on the internet, but never heard the song or anything about it in real life.

Lol, is this a lyric?

It was iconic.. at the time. Looking back I think the GP was so parched for new Bey music that they Stockholm syndrome'd themselves into thinking it was a good song.

It's a PoC classic that stands for DEI clap3

Non-DEI artists can't relate.

It "flopped" basically everywhere because it was never officially released as a single, as far as what we consider a single release. It wasn't sent to radio, it wasn't for sale (until it was a part of the album three months later), it wasn't on streaming, it was given out for free and its music video was unlisted so no streams could count for the Hot 100.

Applying such terms of success or failure on a song that was never meant to be, nor allowed to be competitive on the charts is kinda silly, tbh.

I don't think the average latin or asian person even remembers the song tbh.

It was important and iconic enough to put a word in the dictionary, btw.

Not everyone can say they did that (and this was the second time Beyoncé did that, too).

From Merriam-Webster:

classic

adjective

clas·sic ˈkla-sik

1

a

: serving as a standard of excellence : of recognized value

classic literary works

a classic case study on hysteria

It don't need to have mass appeal to be a classic, as long as it produced an impact and is considered of high value (setting influence) it is a classic

She was boycotted by racist police thus proving the message of the track right, that was A classic pop culturr moment most of y'all lame faves won't ever have

It is more a cult classic.

came here to say this. then it being a tidal exclusive kinda ruined its longevity.

Can a song be called a classic, but no one knows it in real life except some atrl member? ryan3

No. Mostly because it wasn't given the proper chance to be a classic. While I think it was a big moment for Bey and 2016 in general, its release was mostly based on its political context and its performance during Superbowl. There was no effort by Bey outside that to make it a song that would be played enough thereafter to make it a classic. So while pop and music enthusiasts may be familiar with the song, a lot of people worldwide would probably know Run This World before they would know Formation.
