throwback artists that could/could not make a comeback?

Featured Replies

I still believe Asihlee Simpson could give us one last big comeback.

also I've seen a lot of people on X talking about Ashley Tisdale and her sound during her debut era being well liked, but I don't think the GP would tune in other than a first listen and be done with it.

Sounds right to me. Smelling nice | Page 10 | The Popjustice Forum

Couldn't: Christina agularah.

Could: Britney Spears, if she wanted to.

Pretty sure all of the 45+ pop girls are done bar a random Believe or AIWFCIY moment once in a blue moon. The industry will forever be unkind to women over a certain age.

With my choices below I'm less referring to who I can picture having a big full-fledged comeback era but more-so who I can picture randomly scoring a hit, whether or not they have the ability to sustain that and make their era as a whole successful.

Could: Britney Spears, Halsey, Kelly Clarkson,

MAYBE Could: Katy Perry, Kesha, Camila Cabello

Absolutely Not: Christina Aguileria, Nelly Furtado, Iggy Azeala, Fergie, Ava Max

Nelly Furtado and Madonna

I still think that the 7 era was kind of a waste unfortunately. like, the album itself is fine and actually has some cute discography highlights on it! Love Bites, Honesty, Corazon, and Floodgate are all great pop songs clap3 then the single she released afterwards? Marriage? so good! but yeah the hype was THERE and still could be there in the future! she just needs to work with Timbaland more for her

moment giraffe it really all boils down to both that and the fact that the songs on 7 were all way too short. people are nostalgic for 3+ minute pop songs Miss Furtado! allow your epic songs the room to breathe!

Could: Britney Spears

Couldn't: Justin Timberlake and Xtina

If she couldn't attain success with all that Tik Tok praise and the resurgence of Promiscious + Say It Right she's destined to flop forever. The fact that The Ride outcharted 7 in Canada alone… suburban

:( @naval23

I think Kelly Clarkson could but the problem is that it's hard to find a perfect sweet spot between her best stylings and what would truly go viral. I, (granted) as someone who doesn't really use tiktok like that, don't understand why she hasn't yet had her viral hit moments with songs as excellent as Don't Let Me Stop You or You Love Me in her discography... regardless, I think first to get her own viral comeback, she needs a big collab hit to send her name flying up the charts again. and I could very much see that happening! someone should have the chorus of My Life Would Suck without You as the chorus or as a big melodic line in one of their own songs, a sample of that song would do WONDERS in 2026, I'm being so for real about it jonny5 the nostalgia factor is so untapped with Kelly and as a kellebrity it's bothered me since like 2017 atp!

I think Kesha absolutely could again as well. Joyride was a sign that the nostalgia factor for her has been in full swing for awhile now giraffe release Origami queen! get that viral hit!

for artists who couldn't:

Fergie (that shipped has sailed long ago), Gwen Stefani (I just don't see it. even with a No Doubt comeback I think that her image is just incorrigibly tarnished), Xtina (yeah unfortunately it feels too late for her too... idk how to explain it but there's just no interest beyond her fandom. I personally can't wait for new music from her though), Katy (if you asked pre-2024, I would've said she could! but it's too late now. nothing's gonna land for her), Carly Rae Jepsen (this one really sucks but I feel like she's too in her bag of niche/cult artist to be able to emerge from it now cries)

fair thing to me it's always felt like also 7 just was NOT the sound of Nelly's that made her go viral so it contributed to her flopping. when people heard Love Bites it felt like they were either like "hmm intriguing!" or "nope. I'm out. this isn't what all this hype and all these appearances were supposed to build to."

I know this is a hot take but I LOVED Keep Going Up! I know it was cheesy and a clear rehash but I thought it was brilliantly catchy and sounded like a hit lol

They can all make comebacks tbh. Kylie is at a new peak. Madonna is about to slay again. I don't think age has anything to do with it like some said, but having a strong following during the downtime is a huge factor.

Longevity (and ability to comeback) in pop isn't really about age, it's about maintaining connection. Kylie's resurgence with "Padam Padam" worked because she never fully lost her base because she kept feeding fans with tours, festivals, and steady releases, so when the right song hit, the infrastructure was already there.

Madonna's gearing up for another wave because her legacy audience is massive, and she's been keeping herself visible with the Celebration Tour.

People like Hilary Duff can comeback whenever because she keeps herself booked and in the GP's gaze.

So popstars like Ashley French, Jessica and Ashlee, Xtina, Kelly, etc are all poised to have some sort of success especially with humans living for nostalgia.

Katy could, but for some reason she is not putting in the work when she needs to.

I think Avril Lavigne could have a "moment" if she hopped on a Liv Rodrigo collab. If it turns out to be a smash, maybe she could milk the momentum for her own stuff.

i fear you're right. she's in the khia asylum and even said she's not doing music anymore since the floppage of 7.

Couldn't: Fergie, Pink, Avril, Jessica Simpson, Gwen Stefani, JLo, Justin T., Fifth Harmony, Christina Aguilera, Madonna

Could: Rihanna, Katy Perry, Britney,
