This GL praise could be warranted, but it's also giving fan reaction to Happy Mistake which is now mired to 28 streams from @sunbathinganimal daily

I don't remember HM getting this reception. HM was also buried on Harlequin among covers unlike GL.

Joanne's music (and imagery) alienated A LOT of her fanbase. there was no reason she or Mark needed to reign in Lady Gaga as an artist and it was big misstep in hindsight. It also didn't make sense, she wasn't going to suddenly be viewed more seriously because of a lack of synths or stutter-lyrics. I still blame the men around her who tried to convince her that being weird and campy is a detriment to her artistry.

What is NMF looking like for us, are there any big releases coming this week, can we snatch the #1 placement?

Also can we get 2 songs on NMF, is that allowed?

rogue2

Artists sometimes get multiple songs even on TTH, I don't think two songs on NMF should be an issue. But obviously it all depends on Cheaposcope budget and that tends to run pretty thin usually so be prepared for SOAW at #27 on NMF, #43 on TTH and that's pretty much it.

Pick SOAW's daily streaming peak on weekend 1:

More than 35M+

Eh, her Sound of Music performance probably made her think that. Plus she seemed exhausted by some aspects of the 2008-2014 era and craziness by then. I don't think it was all on the people around her.

Are we gonna be mad she didn't put GL on Mayhem or save it for Aries?

Better it get its own spotlight with this film that tacked onto an album

I think it was partially due to burn-out like you said, but I also think there was other stuff in her ear at the time. I mean, she kind of confirmed that during the Mayhem era when she mentioned someone telling her to tone things down in 2016 and avoid the maximalism that she was so famous for.

It's frustrating too because if you look at the credits on the album, so many of the collaborators could've really made something special compared to how subdued the final product is. Look at the in-line credits: you had Florence Welch, Mark Ronson, Jeff Bhasker, BECK (!!!), Kevin Parker (!!!!), Este Haim, Anthony Rossomando, the drummer from arctic monkeys, like why the hell wasn't this album a magnum opus for her? or a return to form? Glam Rock, Psychedelic pop, indie, folk, electronic, synth-pop, acid house, there were SO MANY ways she could've approached the album to create a really unique body of work, but instead we got some super subdued with blips of Gaga-ness on certain tracks like she wanted to go to her roots and didn't...

And I don't hate Joanne at all, I don't even think it's a bad album, but I can also see why outside of MR and maybe a few other tracks why it may be forgotten in the long-run.

Yep, she explicitly said that one of her producers on Joanne told her to dress like a normal person if she wanted to be taken seriously as a musician. Then she added that she felt the furthest from herself doing Joanne, even though she was selling the "this is authentically me" thing

Edited by opbranden

Anyway among this discourse of Joanne I thought I'd add Harlequin >>>>>> allears She made a mostly covers album (jazz at that) dripping in the Gaganess and quality Joanne was lacking.

The way she sold Joanne as her most "female" album (with the whole female friendship and appealing to middle of America women talk) only for it to be from the straight male perception of what a woman is. Kinda makes sense why she pushed Harlequin and MAYHEM as projects proving women can be many things

I think you're underestimating the amount of vitriol she received just for being Lady Gaga, even after stuff like her 'tributes' era. She was very widely scrutinized for the David Bowie tribute and many people were trying to make fun of her for no reason. Joanne was instrumental in an image rebrand even if it was musically regressive and middling. Without Joanne she (and us as a fanbase) wouldn't be where we are today. It helped segue perfectly into ASIB, helped her finally book the Halftime show, got her a Coachella headlining slot, a massive sold out world tour where she first did stadiums in the US. The doors that album and image opened for her to the future is what leads to something like Copacabana happening.

Joanne's a mixed bag for me. On one hand, I feel like Gaga venturing into that sound helped set the stage for ASIB to smash (+ it got her the Super Bowl).

On the other hand, the music wasn't really as good as it could've been outside of a few examples. Though again, ASIB did that sound (country-adjacent/acoustic) really well so it ended up being a moot point. I would've obviously preferred the original LG5 to what we ended up getting, but I have a feeling it would've ended up being sonically similar to Mayhem anyways so I'm also not mad at that.

Another consideration I have is that even if Gaga released the original LG5 instead of Joanne at the time, the budget would've still been minimal. Those legal document leaks from a few years back said that Joanne's budget was $6.5 million iirc. Between studio time, photoshoots, producers, writers, multiple MVs, playlisting (which they didn't spend a cent on at the time), wardrobe, hair, makeup, and choreography for an A-list musician, that's not a massive budget. So even if LG5 in its original form were released, I don't think it would've been more eventful than the era we ended up getting + the trendy radio sound at the time was too far removed from Gaga's brand of dark pop for it to work as a "return to her earlier sound".

Joanne's 6.5 million budget was only for the album itself, nothing else. Artpop's '25 million' included a personal cash advance to her of like 11 or 12 million on top of other things.

*also Propagaga (aka Mindtrappa from PopJustice) said that her sessions with RedOne and the 'original LG5' were simply done to get her back into making music after a brief hiatus, they were never intended to be a fully fledged album. She didn't embark on recording an album until Joanne, when she got w/ Mark Ronson in early 2016 and slotted out time. Interscope didn't like what came out of a lot of their sessions and they brought Bloodpop in to try to add more of a 'pop' edge to the album, which is how you end up with production that sounds very confused.

I'm going to be blunt, many of those things happened because she's Lady Gaga, and not because of Joanne. Most people didn't even hear that record outside of Million Reasons and even then...outside of the public lashings she was getting during ARTPOP (which is a different topic I have opinions about), people were already excited for her return with LG5. Then she dropped PI, started the toned-down interviews, and the rest is history.

She already booked ASIB, she would've gotten the SBHTS either way (they wanted her 4 years earlier iirc), and then everything else kind of fell in place. I think our fanbase either misattributes her image rebrand to Joanne (which it had some effect, but not much - by December 2016 she was back to wearing pleasers and couture-looks) or overstates the new fans she picked up with the album (The bulk of those wine-moms she picked up did not stick around in the long-run, they were upset with Alejandro during the tour ffs). The catalyst for change started with C2C and the Sound of Music tribute and the real push came during ASIB where people were shocked by her talent (again) and how she looked without wigs and heavy makeup.

All my opinion of course.

Gaga is at her best without boundaries, TF/M, BTW and MAYHEM clearly show that.

Joanne felt like a cage both visually and musically. I get everything you all are saying but artistically it's her lowest point imo

I will say, Joanne did allow fans and the public that she is more than a "one-trick pony" when it comes to what she can do with music. That, I will appreciate. But like I said, it's not really a genre-specific issue, it's the execution of the record that is meh to me.

I actually don't disagree w/ any of this now that you point it out, I forgot that she had booked ASIB ahead of time. I think everything kind've coalesced perfectly on accident in ways for her to blow back up.
