Loser is the most annoyingly catchy song I heard in a long time. That guitar riff and his falsetto vocals were stuck in my head for a whole day. It was a nightmare.

 

Dracula reminds me of Chris Cornell's collab with Timbaland. Catchy but Dua Lipa would sing it better.

 

I think we all forgot Tame Impala's whole gimmick was psychedelia. Kevin Parker's vocals have always been a John Lennon placeholder. He's not a charismatic popstar. He's always been an idol for nerds. He's definitely self aware of this since he's doing a self deprecating angle for this pop reinvention.

 

These attempts at selling out with the "Look how unpretentious I am by doing dance pop" cop out always fail. I hope the album has some old Tame Impala vibes. 

 

He really gives me nerd who got popular then instantly cheated on his longtime girlfriend vibes. I think he's trying something with this Deadbeat cosplay so let's see if he pulls it off. I'm morbidly intrigued.

The inferiority complex of a sub-6ft skinny body type high pitched voice man always externalize in some way then consume their entire existence the moment they get really successful. I think that's what's happening with Kevin Parker and these songs are the manifestations of it.

best single from this era!

this is a kii of assumptive psychoanalysis so I threw it a like but no, Kevin is a dancepop stan who grew up stanning Kylie Minogue so I'd say the psychedelia was more for an outcast fitting into a community with indie clout and getting through his stoner development years. This is definitely giving "big enough to make what I want to make" vibes

I think that's why external pressures and need for external validation is good for art. It makes us approach things from an outsider perspective. Usually doing what we're stans of requires a different approach and skillset from what we assume. Our most inner passions are our blindspots in a way. Pop music in general requires a level of giving up control whether it be only performing it or betting on a single melody to be the hook out of all the ideas and a huge dose of narcissism. The genius complex brain persona doesn't really jive with it because it makes the artist overthink things and these new Tame Impala songs sound like he's intellectualising pop music and not truly letting it all go. His music has always been pretty hooky with catchy pop songs like The Less I Know The Better, Feels Like We Only Go Backwards. Kevin's ambitions to be a straight pop producer shows on Perfect Illusion, Radical Optimism etc while the fans of pop artists expect psychedelia from his involvement then get disappointed. I don't know I'm just rambling lol. The best pop producers are quite shameless with copying so he needs more unoriginality maybe. The funny thing is maybe if he was doing pop music for more clout it'd yield better results.

there was a time that i was obsessed with Tame Impala but his latest releases are just not for me. Glad some are enjoying it though

Exactly. Dr. Luke would've released his 50th track out of Let It Happen alone by now. Kevin Parker could've been the new Max Martin just by exploiting the riffs and hooks from Currents. Pop music is all about establishing a brand then exploiting the f***out of it. He's not shameless enough and is insisting on making songs for self proclaimed intellectual straight men who are too insecure to talk to women but with bullsh*t poptimism spin now.

This really puts in perspective on how long he's been super popular now. Perfect Illusion and Same Ol' Mistakes happened in 2016 damn. He peaked in 2015 but is marketing the new album like he's jumping the shark just now? That's crazy. He's been soft launching his pop rebrand like a self hating gay man in a glass closet.

Ive listened to all the singles he put i only listen to other songs like 2 times, so i don't remember how it sounds now but this one got my attention. It's a cute song. Probably this one gonna be my fav single.
