Was Xtina's B2B the wrong move?

Featured Replies

After 2 successful eras, the radical shift in sound/image during the Back2Basics era seemed to mark a change in her career. As shown in her album sales, they declined significantly from B2B onwards.

Xtina album units:

1999 - 2003 albums - 33.4m

CA - 17.9m

My Kind Xmas - 1.9m

Stripped - 13.6m

2004 - 2025 albums - 9.7m

B2B - 6.8m

Bionic - 1.5m

Lotus - 1.1m

Liberation - 0.2m

Aguilera - 0.1m

The long breaks between albums slowed down her momentum.

She lost me with that album.

Eventhough the visuals were great, the sound was very boring outside the lead and hurt.

The 4 year breaks made it worse.

But B2B was a success, and considering she switched images again after B2B, to whatever Bionic was supposed to be; wouldn't that mean Bionic was the wrong move?

Looking back I can't imagine Christina releasing anything other than Back to Basics in 2006.

She already tried everything she was great at with Stripped, Mi Reflejo and self-titled. Bubblegum Pop? Check. Latin Pop? Check. Contemporary R&B? Check. She wanted something new and she recreated that 50s sound that nobody was doing at the time. I think that was pretty dope of her; anything other than that would have seemed a bit repetitive and with less shock value.

However I do wonder what could have happened if she had doubled down on the Dirrty vibe instead of going for pin-up hot but classy vibe.

It was a success but its large decline from Stripped.

She was only 25/26 during B2B and not even a decade into her career - it's clear the album turned off a lot of her audience. Bionic was just the after effect of a smaller prior era and questionable direction/image.

Back to Basics is a masterpiece and I think people really loved that era. I just think what lost people is Bionic. It was an amazing album too but it was a complete U-turn from Back to Basics' classy image and classic sound. Everything would have fared way better had she released Bionic between Stripped and Back to Basics, but that's pure fiction anyway.

The long waits also killed all her momentum. Plus the fact that she gave up after her divorce. I love her but she lost that spark.

Even though Stripped was her best era, I actually enjoyed B2B.

There were some bops on that album and her visuals were amazing.

It is great in concept, but we have to take into account that it was just her THIRD major album. She should've followed up from her Stripped image and sound first, and only then make a retro album.

3 radically different concepts from 3 different albums with long breaks between each other... it's a miracle her career even got that far.

It's an amazing album and was successful so no.

The long breaks she took/takes are what is most detrimental to her career.

It's a solid album, but way too long for such a specific sound. I think that's the reason people started to lose the connection with her.

I don't think that's a can of worms we want to open when it comes to Xtina

I don't think they realize how stupid their comment comes across :toofunny3:

i think B2B was a good choice in sound and aesthetic, it was able to please young pop fans and soccer moms too. those years were key for Xtina and it wasn't the album itself that was an issue, but her overall management and career choices that made her falter. for example, they didn't address that double sales issue. i recall that if B2B had 2 extra tracks, the sales would be counted as double. Or something along those lines.

I don't think B2B is where things went wrong for her. Sure it was a decline, but most artists who break through during their debuts don't sell the same amount 7-8 years into their career. Forgive the Britney comparison, but compare the sales of Self-Titled and ITZ to BOMT and Oops and you'll see a similar decline; but everyone largely considers the former albums huge successes.

Keeps Gettin' Better being a sizable hit in 2008 showed that Xtina still had some momentum on name alone. I think Bionic and Lotus lacking hits is what did her in.

Lol no it was an amazing album that truly showed her vocal abilities

the problem was the long ass breaks

b2B should've been released AT LEAST in 2005 and Bionic in 2007 with Keeps getting better as the lead single and then NMT

No. I was really young but I remember that being an era. Everyone was paying attention to her. It may not have sold as much as Stripped but it was a huge success still, and tbh everyone's sales were declining at the time because of the digital shift.

I disagree with Keeps Getting Better. It made 0 year end charts except Canada at #85 and German Airplay at #70. I couldn't find any certifications for it either.

It's streams are truly bad at 15m and 43m views on YT, which is low for a 2008 song.

That is not a hit. It's units are probably on par with any random MPG album track.

Yeah I loved Stripped but was not a fan of B2B. I think it did well because of the goodwill & hype she had from Stripped but she turned off a lot of her casual fans. Then you add the long breaks and you kill your career

It felt very gimmicky.

Like suddenly she was this 50's blonde bombshell – and it wold have been one thing if this had turned into a trend or something, but it really wasn't in line with the trends at the time. So it was all kind of bizarre :deadbanana:

However, that is also what made it kind of amazing, or at least interesting. She just decided she was gonna be a Marilyn Monroe lookalike and went with it 100%. That took some balls!

B2b was lucky to come out after Stripped. If Bionic was released after Stripped it would have had the same success as B2B. By the time she released Bionic her career was already damaged. I remember her Greatest Hits that came out just before was not a success

It doesn't have to anything with Back to Basics, itself, it was her actions—or lack thereof—afterward. She did nothing with the momentum she had during that time. It's easy for some to forget, but she was everywhere during that time period during the promotion of that album. She achieved quite a bit of success.

If she would have released her next album in 2008, no later than 2009, I think she would have been fine. But she kept dragging her feet for years, letting the industry pass her by, undergoing another musical change that seemed reactive rather than proactive—which didn't do her any favors, with Lady Gaga already smashing that sound left and right by the time she'd release Bionic.

Her career choices just weren't the best from then up to now. I do think, though, her priorities have shifted since having a family of her own, which is respectable.
