Do you really not understand how impressive it is for an artist to reach across significant cultural and linguistic divides around the world?

    This thread is giving MAGA

Okay... but has YOUR fave sold out stadiums in 6 continents?

If the argument is that monetary value is what matters, then any "cultural impact" discourse must also be meaningless because no direct monetary value is generated from there. Stan driven sales of physical sales of album variants, photo cards, merch, and high priced premium concert tickets are what generate monetary gains.

What's the correlation between music and a country's gdp?

It's weird, GDP doesn't even correlate with music market size. So that's not even relevant in a music context

Even if you talk about numbers, isn't the point to reach the maximum people with your art? :celestial6:

Everyone's opinion should count when talking about music popularity, no matter where they were from or their countries GDP.

The problem is using someone being less popular in another country or region as a means to discredit their impact or influence. That's idiotic, and happens often on here.

The insecurity and defensiveness emanating from the OP

OT: No, in fact it's underrated and a very meaningful way to see which artists have a healthy spread of global consumption vs disproportionately region-heavy.

I dont know about GDP and stuff like that, but all our favs are global to an extent. They are not in a Garth Brooks type of situation where they are only known in the US and not elsewhere. So this "global" argument is dumb anyway.

All of them slay the Western World and are known (to an extent) globally.

Now whether they are able to be successful in Africa, Asia and the Arab World is a different Story and how we define success, but in general, they are all global.

The gays in Asia for instance KNOW our Western girlies mostly (the truly successful ones lile Gaga, Beyonce, RiRi, Taylor), so theres that.

Embarrassing topic. It's not just about money and capitalism, imagine thinking ur music making an impact on millions of people in many places where they don't necessarily pay for music is somehow "meaningless". Go touch grass.

Mods, please allow me to say this:

Girl **** your racist ass

ETA: let these top countries return the stolen resources back to africa and let's see what the GDP gives

the definition of "global" is so skewed on music forums and varies from person to person, fan base to fan base. is it based on touring? Spotify? certified sales? radio play? illegal downloads? sheer celebrity?

I agree with the main idea that a #1 in Moldova doesn't hold the same value as a #1 in the US/UK/Japan/Germany. I'm sure, if given the option to choose, most artists and their fans would choose a US Hot 100 entry (let alone a #1) over topping the Kazakhstan charts for 6 weeks.

at the same time, it seems weird to completely rule out countries / markets just because they don't bring in enough revenue. like duh, a former-USSR country with 3.5 million people will pale in comparison to the US. that doesn't make the people there invalid.

Not the OP's wig getting eviscerated here
