Jess Glynne, I know she never broke into the US beyond her Clean Bandit stuff but girl what happened... now she's just terrorizing Jet2 passengers.

??? she literally had 4 successful eras straight. would have easily got 5 if she wasn't sabotaged during Higher Than Heaven era

Dua Lipa. Everything was going so well until Houdini happened. :jonny2:

Came to say this. She was basically THERE and then this new album kinda ended it. Makes sense though - she's never been good at connecting with fans/building a core fanbase. When you're a radio darling, your success is infringement on having radio success to sustain it.

Tate McRae

Had a quick little top 5 hit a few years ago and hasn't hit the top 10 since

Nelly was definitely a MPG. Her Loose era was so enormous that it is not prudent to deny her that status.

Eh. She was close, but to me she wasn't quite mpg. I feel there was never much interest in her as an artist, it was just quick little hits. The loose tour mainly doing theaters support this, I think.

I honestly don't think she ever wanted to play the pop girl game

Team and Ribs have almost 1 billion streams.

Team is like 6X platinum.

People like to discuss Katy's decline, but Lorde's decline is actually more shocking.

11.5M > 3.6M > 677K:deadbanana2:

I guess some Billie haters assumed that her trajectory would look the same, but Billie is bigger than ever with her third album.

I agree, tbh in hindsight Katy's decline isn't all that extreme when compared to the girls mentioned here. She at least had 3 big albums. Even Witness had a top 10 and Smile had moderate hit NRO and cult classic Harley's in Hawaii.

i don't mean this in a rude way but Megan Trainor having any kind of commercial success was the shocking part for me.

She always gave me more likely to be a camp teacher than global superstar.

The lights to brightest blue run was successful. each album had at least 1 successful hit single, not to mention droplets

Lorde. From massive hits and denying Katy Perry her likeliest Grammy win to becoming a complete non-factor commercially.

Not really surprising. She was lucky she got her one hit because she was always destined to be an under the radar girl.

It's a blessing and a curse because she'll always be held to the standard of trying to recreate the success that she clearly isn't trying to chase anymore, but it does mean there's always going to be interest in her releases she might not otherwise have had had if she didn't have the early success.

so then why does her new album sound exactly like Pure Heroine

That's funny because I thought the same about Bruno Mars when he came out. I thought he was destined to be a college dropout surfer living off the kindness of others and being an insufferable love bomber on tinder.

This would be true if not for the fact the Bruno LOOKED interesting at least. And I think that plays into it (as well as him being male and essentially being the "crooner" of his era). When I first saw Bruno my first thought was "what is he?" And I mean like, ethnically, ignorant as it sounds.

He was basically a more interesting looking Michael Bublé with a slightly less annoying voice and it gave him the juice to come back AFTER Doo Wops & Hooligans with Unorthodox Jukebox, which was interesting enough a record (take Locked out of Heaven for instance) to really establish him as a major force.

He also had the smarts to adopt the more interesting funk sound/aesthetic while turning down the corooner bit (just enough but not too much that he lost his original audience, Locked out of Heaven was followed by When I was Your Man for example).

Meghan was boring her second era and she still just looked like a soccer mom in training.

#1 album in 2025. Sports Car hit the top 10 in UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Greece, etc. What I Want hit #1 in the US. Just Keep Watching also went top 10 in many markets, and is still hitting new peaks and growing despite not being an RCA release, so no label support.

It does?

56 members browsing this site really lives for an underperformance :deadbanana4:

for me the more shocking are the ones that didn't even come close, like CL and Zara Larsson. when someone gets halfway or 3/4 there like Ellie, Lorde etc, you can pretty easily pinpoint all the decisions that led them to where they are now.

"No label support" Please... she wouldn't be where she is at this moment without her label support.

Does Gwen Stefani count?

LAMB had loads of hits, The Sweet Escape really only had the title track (a smash hit of course) and a cute top 10 peak that does less than 30k daily nowadays, then she just disappeared...

Lorde clearly had a downfall in her career BUT Katy's downfall was worse because she was a MPG, one of the biggest female artists of that time like she just performed the Super Bowl and smashed with "Roar" and "Dark Horse" and then she pulled Witness, then Smile and now 143...

All her peers surpassed her.
