Paper Rings would've been the perfect lead for Loser

it's one of the best songs on the album, it would resonate very well with the younger audience that she was aiming for with the album(just look at how it's incredibly popular with shippers on tiktok and twitter) + it's just very easy to get into

Forgotten Summer was DOA, idk why swifties pretend it's such an incredible song when it's nothing of the sort

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: ME! needed to be released and to flop so that Taylor would be scared out of immature radio pop and into a more mature and artful chapter of her music. Cruel Summer would have been a great lead but we may not have gotten folklore/evermore, and that would be tragic.

Cruel Summer is one of her top 3 on Spotify rn, let’s not pretend it would’ve flopped

No wonder Taylor has no idea how to pick singles when her stans would suggest THAT. Paper Rings is basically ME! again but without any cringe lyrics. That doesn’t make it a good lead single - that makes it another song that would have been dragged if it was released to start the era.
 

The only songs on Lover that have the quality and hit power to make a statement as a lead and get the gp to check in were Lover or Cruel Summer. Everything else was either too slow, too long, or too kids bop (and please don’t take this critique as me being an OLH, I actually like her). I actually do think YNTCD was a fine follow up single so she can stay. ME! can stay, stay, stay (pun and reference intended) hidden from the gp on the album as this era’s filler track

Why do Swifties insist Paper Rings would’ve been a hit just because of its streaming numbers today? The song has been popping off retrospectively. Don’t get me wrong, I love it, but it would’ve never been a hit during the Lover era. 
 

How the era should’ve gone:

1st single: Lover 

2nd single: Cruel Summer 

3rd: single: YNTCD 

4th single: Miss Americana 

 

Lover would’ve been the right lead single, honestly. Starting a pop era with a ballad is always risky, but I think that was the one era where it would’ve payed off. I’m not delusional enough to think it would’ve been a six week #1 smash, but it would’ve gotten everyone’s attention in a positive way (as opposed to what Me! did). Cruel Summer was an obvious choice for 2nd single. YNTCD was always going to be released no matter what, I get it. It was never going to do any bigger numbers than it did either, so it is what it is. Miss Americana would’ve been the perfect last single. It wouldn’t have been a hit, but honestly there’s not a good closing single for the Lover era (as much as I actually love the album). Miss Americana would’ve just been a really great lead-in to the Netflix doc.

Tbh there were really only three “hits” on the album (using the word hit loosely for YNTCD). I love the album and think it’s actually one of her most underrated and I’ll always be #TeamLover, but it really isn’t that commercial for a pop album. Even with the era better planned out, the good sis was only getting two hits out of it and then whatever YNTCD was going to be. Who knows, it may have even done a little better itself with a different rollout. 

u guys have ZERO taste or logic. Yes Paper Rings would have been a hit (maybe not a lead though). Yes Cruel Summer would have also been a hit. You guys are so not SKINNY and you just do not get IT.

Anyways...I am very upset today. I woke up sobbing and in tears cuz I realized Taylor did not film many mvs for Folklore or Evermore. How is THAT OK? Exile and The 1 would have been 4x platinum smash hits by now (with Exile for sure being another #1 especially when the sex scene with Bon Bon takes place on top of the Cardigan piano in the midlde of the ocean)

The worst thing about Me! is that annoying chorus. Its way too over the top happy and loud. It needed to be cut from the album.

 

Paper Rings would have been a great lead single. Yes some critics wouldnt have liked it, but it would have easily been bigger than Me!

Yes, rep tv has the potential to become Taylor's biggest era in the 2020s!!! Hope she nailed it for the rep tv era!!! I think that dancing with our hands tied could be potentially Taylor's longest charting single on the hot 100 if she looked for the Weeknd to collab on that song!!!
