am i wrong in assuming based on what i've heard so far (and that's why i'm asking, idk if she's shared snippets that have a different sound) this seems to be a much more pop focused record ? i really kinda wanted her to stay in a more rap centric lane

She said at her AirBnB listening event that her next project would be R&B/Pop (…but of course w/ Rap verses).  
 

Im surprised she actually stuck to it…she at least changes her mind 2-3 times before times before release lol.  
 

She seemed to record this album rather fast too. Her having a more focused sound prob made it easier to churn it out.

she's not even 30 yet so she's still got plenty of viability as a dominating force on the charts / in the industry but i really want a straight. up. rap record from her. and i know, i know: that was kind of the point of Scarlet but i really didn't connect with the early-Lupe Fiasco-Kick-Push-esque production on a lot of the songs, but the bars and energy were still there. it sounds whiny cuz she technically gave me exactly what i wanted and im still like "no not in that way" but she still has sooo much untapped potential as a rapper. i like some of her more pop leaning stuff too but in my mind that's the safe pivot for her after she delivers an irrefutably stellar rap album.

Yeah, Scarlet wasn't a focused record sonically, imo…especially the first version.  That's my main gripe.  Like I get where she was trying to go…but she didn't fully commit.

 

The whole half trap, half boom bap kind made it feel incomplete.  Claude rounded it out a bit more.
 

But ultimately…I feel like there was a lot of fighting behind-the-scenes on the direction (+ marketing).  And it showed in the final product + the sales.  
 

I mean…Agora Hills and PTTR sounded nothing like the rest of the project, ha.

I feel like Doja's album releases will probably serve as a pendulum from here on out. Scarlet was a flex on her artistry and just how far she could alienate her pop audience without completely abandoning them. However, it was also a bit of a disaster commercially outside of the radio supported singles, and well let's not get into the whole social media mess. Ultimately, she succeeded in separating herself from the artist that she was up to 2021, for better or for worse.

 

Vie will prob be a hard swing to the right to make up for the Pop/R&B fans that miss the Hot Pink-Planet Her era and make label suits & pop radio happy. Obviously with a new jack swing 80s janet, paula influenced sound to keep things interesting and sophisticated. I do hope we get some more playful, humorous bars again as that's the one thing I really was missing from both acts of Scarlet. Like she was hellbent on being so serious that it sucked all the fun out of certain songs at some points. 

 

Next album will most likely be another left-field swing in to rap again (I assume), but hopefully this time with some more fresh influences like electronic, house, industrial sounds that she was previously trolling about in a pre-scarlet era interview. At the same time it's so hard to guess where she's going next because she's such a chameleon. I'm sure she could make a psychedelic rock album sound good fff 

After this snippet, I am absolutely stoked for what she has in store for us. 

 

However I'm a bit annoyed that we have multiple snippets before the first single. 

 

It takes away a bit of the impact that it could have.
