It's not ok, especially for concerts. I don't respect artists like this and if they do that I wouldn't bother paying to see them live. Equally if they sound terrible it's not worth the money either haha

Disagree. That's a scam. I'd rather they just adlib while the backing singers do the chorus if they are having a rough time, while singing the easier verses live in full

The truth is that most artists use some sort of playback which makes sense. To play and sing totally live would make a lot of modern music sound quite different. 
 

Concerts are also highly synced spectacles. Being totally live is also a logistical nightmare for shows like Renaissance and Eras. 
 

I think many people also underestimate how hard singing is on your voice. My background is live performance and it is HARD. Many Broadway performers have very strict routines and minimal lives outside their shows. They also are only singing for part of the show! Even leads get big breaks in 90% of shows/have understudies and standbys. And, while they also utilize good technique, many many many leads experience vocal damage from demanding tracks and need rest time after a contract!
 

For that reason, some playback and live tuning doesn't bother me. As long as you're getting a lot of live vocals and an amazing show, I actually kinda prefer it. People also don't understand how difficult moving and singing is. Even light choreography makes singing difficult.
 

Adele is the quintessential example of "park and bark" and she sings basically everything live. However, she has dealt with crazy vocal damage, multiple surgeries, and tons of cancelled gigs so *shrug*. Mariah shredded her voice trying to do everything live also. 
 

It's all about balance. If we don't want our faves to ruin their voices and we want them to tour extensively, I'm fine with some help. Extensive touring asks a LOT of a person. Lipping everything is one thing, but relying on playback strategically is another. Taylor and Beyonce are both experts at the balance imo.

This is only half true. Pop music isn't opera. This would significantly change the sound of lots of music. Lots of pop is sung stylistically which is much harder on the voice. 

It really depends on how much they rely on it and what their excuse is. If they just shamelessly let half of the song play without singing it's obviously not the tea

It depends, in general I don't like it. Maybe I can take some of it from someone like Taylor who doesn't offer much vocally anyway (you don't stan her for her voice lbr) but if it was Ariana, someone I love for their voice specifically, it would piss me off.

 

And it's even worse when the artist doesn't put on a show, like if you can't perform you might as well pick another career.

I mean if you are using your throat to sing with that style you mention then your voice is going to be damaged singing live.

Beyoncé could do these performances and sing live. I think Janet and Britney are even lipping the ballads so it's not just the choreography

 

Also Madonna dances during her performances and she still sings live

singers are human. its not realistic for a singer, especially with a busy schedule that travels a lot, to sing live all the time.

If they can't handle it, maybe singing isn't for them. They can lower the key, do less dates, adlib around the hard parts, rely on backing singers, etc if they want to rest their voice. A one off lip synch while sick might be acceptable, but if you're paying to see someone live, they should be live. Unless choreo is their thing and the audience knows it.

I'm fine with it if it's used to augment live vocals or during heavy choreography moments but if it's basically sticking the CD on and moving your mouth it's embarrassing and yes I'm aware I'm a Britney fan.

The ability to fake it even during a live concert.  Isn't technology wonderful ? 

I'm fine with big, loud choruses being a backing track, especially if the singer does ad-libs simutaneously. Quiet, acoustic songs need to be 100% live, though.
