Because Chromatica sucks. It's not a good album at all. It's bland dance music with no soul. And it's not innovative or referential.

 

RENAISSANCE has better music, a better tour, a concert film, music videos locked away in a vault that will never see the light of day, it pays homage to the black + queer communities genuinely by actually featuring ICONS from Ballroom, Beyonce is singing her entire face off, it has samples that actually make the songs a lot more interesting and fun

 

I love how everything they said from the beginning of the era backfired on them

But was anyone really expecting Gaga to compete with Bey?

 

Bey has been outselling her since 2013 non-stop with each studio album

 

The soundtracks don’t count because the demand of those is for the movie and not the artist

So, the albums where Bey outsells Gaga count, but when Gaga´s Soundtrack sells 10M WW while Bey´s Soundtrack sells 1M WW it doesn´t count?

If you are referring to The Gift, that is not a soundtrack it is an album inspired by The Lion King. And only one song from it appeared in the actual film it was associated with...as background music for like 30 seconds. And that song was already released as part of the actual soundtrack a week prior to The Gift.

 

That would be like calling B'Day the soundtrack to Dreamgirls because it was inspired by the film and contains one song that was featured in it.

Soundtracks are not connected to the artist’s position in the market, they are independent franchises.

Yeah, I was referring to "The Gift". The comment I qouted said "Sountracks", so I thought that Bey also released a "Soundtrack". Did not check that up.

Either way, ASIB is one of Gaga´s seven original album releases and there is no reason not to include it.

That might be the truth for most of the Soundtracks (for example The Greatest Showman) where many artists appear on different songs. But in this case Gaga is credited for 18/19 songs and credited for the certifications.

It's a concept album "soundtrack" where Beyoncé re-imagines the story through her own music. But if we are talking commercially, since it's not actually in the film, and having people experience the music through the film is a soundtrack's biggest form of promotion, it doesn't really compare.

The problem with that music wasn't the movie. 

Anyway, back on topic.

 

I don't wish to engage in petty stan-wars and think I may be stepping into one so will be careful with how I say this, focusing more on the albums themselves than the stars behind them, and talking about I think wasn't right about Chromatica as an era and an album.

 

To start, the lead single was not the greatest, and while it said "SHE'S BACK TO POP!" it also said "with Bad Romance 2.0" which doesn't really say much about what the rest of the album will be artistically. I understand why Rain on Me wasn't the lead, as Gaga likely wanted to handle her comeback on her own at first, but it indeed was the better and more original single choice.

 

But most importantly, I think Chromatica would have fared better had Gaga been clearer about its intentions. If Chromatica was this other world, that should have been better explained. Right from the start, the "why" of it all was completely lost and it seemed more for camp than concept. If she was content with re-doing past work with the Stupid Love lyrics, she should have also leaned on the approach of the Born this Way music video intro which very neatly and emotionally outlined the idea. Instead we got a confusing small paragraph about Kindess Punks and the rest we had to learn from interviews and even then it was never quite clear.

 

Comparing that to RENAISSANCE, we see an album that without even one video was very clearly and intelligibly explained through the music itself. The dance/queer/ballroom references were clear, the samples underlined meaning, and her intent was painted through lyrics like the rainbow callouts in COZY. There even is a bit of storytelling if you view the album as a journey through a night at the club. You didn't have to read her liner notes to know what she was trying to do. The lead single was indicative of the album without giving it all away, and even with no promo, it seemed to do well because her ideas (dance music) was well translated in the experience itself (such as having no gaps, all transitions, etc.). It also did a great job of straddling originality with references, and this made it both new for listeners yet aurally comfortable (and if you are unfamiliar with her references then I suppose you'd just find it all to be fresh). A song like CUFF IT is probably the most commercial (or: generic) of all songs on the album, but it had enough of the 1980s rap references in it to make it seem a bit different from the other disco songs that had been popular in previous years, again giving us something fresh but referential.

I remember back in the day Gaga fans put Beyoncé's name through the mud (remember that user Remixed?) that she hadn't been successful since "Telephone", couldn't score a solo hit, Gaga was responsible for its success, and all the rest of it. This cockiness vanished as soon as Artpop dropped but it came back during ASIB.

 

Time is the ultimate truth-teller and Beyoncé turned the tables.

Bigger artist, better music, better vocals, better production, better theme, better execution, better dancer. What’s to question?
