Loved this entire album on the first listen. It gets you so excited and has a really good energy. on other hand I just gave chromatica re listen for the first time since 2020 and it's actually good y'all **** on its existence way too much. 

RENAISSANCE is simply the better album.

I don't wish to engage in petty stan-wars and think I may be stepping into one so will be careful with how I say this, focusing more on the albums themselves than the stars behind them, and talking about I think wasn't right about Chromatica as an era and an album.

 

To start, the lead single was not the greatest, and while it said "SHE'S BACK TO POP!" it also said "with Bad Romance 2.0" which doesn't really say much about what the rest of the album will be artistically. I understand why Rain on Me wasn't the lead, as Gaga likely wanted to handle her comeback on her own at first, but it indeed was the better and more original single choice.

 

But most importantly, I think Chromatica would have fared better had Gaga been clearer about its intentions. If Chromatica was this other world, that should have been better explained. Right from the start, the "why" of it all was completely lost and it seemed more for camp than concept. If she was content with re-doing past work with the Stupid Love lyrics, she should have also leaned on the approach of the Born this Way music video intro which very neatly and emotionally outlined the idea. Instead we got a confusing small paragraph about Kindess Punks and the rest we had to learn from interviews and even then it was never quite clear.

 

Comparing that to RENAISSANCE, we see an album that without even one video was very clearly and intelligibly explained through the music itself. The dance/queer/ballroom references were clear, the samples underlined meaning, and her intent was painted through lyrics like the rainbow callouts in COZY. There even is a bit of storytelling if you view the album as a journey through a night at the club. You didn't have to read her liner notes to know what she was trying to do. The lead single was indicative of the album without giving it all away, and even with no promo, it seemed to do well because her ideas (dance music) was well translated in the experience itself (such as having no gaps, all transitions, etc.). It also did a great job of straddling originality with references, and this made it both new for listeners yet aurally comfortable (and if you are unfamiliar with her references then I suppose you'd just find it all to be fresh). A song like CUFF IT is probably the most commercial (or: generic) of all songs on the album, but it had enough of the 1980s rap references in it to make it seem a bit different from the other disco songs that had been popular in previous years, again giving us something fresh but referential.

The overall messages of the songs are different, but the most memorable lyrics of each chorus are quite similar. Where they differ in those lines, synonyms are used: "stupid" for "bad", "love" for "romance".
 

Bad Romance:
"I want it bad, your bad romance"
"I want your love"

Stupid Love:
"I want your stupid love, love"

 

 

Obviously they're different songs, but getting caught up on this doesn't really speak to my point which was that the lead single didn't do anything as innovative as Gaga deserved for her big return to pop, given what a pop innovator she had been in the past and what made her so special as a popstar. I think had she set up the era to be more interesting and/or surprising from the first listen in terms of production but also lyrical content, I think overall the album might have fared better. And if it didn't reach the masses because of this, at least it might have developed a more cult following that I don't think the song or the album ever really achieved, even among fans.

I'd say this if Beyoncé released a song called "Unpartnered Chicas", too. And I could say the same thing with a real Beyoncé example. It's not some terrible shade to point out similar details. Déja Vu is lyrically Crazy in Love 2.0, even though one song is about being so in love you're acting foolish while the other is about wanting to be with someone so much that you start seeing him everywhere. Still, the idea of having "déjà vus" and acting "crazy" both centre the same heightened general mental state as the concept of the song.

Born This Way was a bigger album than 4. It should have already outstreamed it already. 
 

Renaissance was getting comparisons pre release to Chromatica due to both having house music, and monsters were hyping it up to be a huge bomb waiting to happen……

its not common sense asib is gagas album, she wrote it and sang on it. it forever will be a part of her legacy and its a smash hit

They both did really well, I'm not sure a difference of 4 million streams (or whatever, 300 million streams a year from now) is anything to go crazy over. It's not like Bey pulled Midnights numbers either
