Her contemporaries like SZA, H.E.R., Summer Walker, Kehlani, Jhene Aiko, and Ella Mai have all had at least one huge era or modest sized eras. 

 

Why couldn't Ari Lennox really break through despite her exposure?

Unlike SZA, H.E.R, Jhene Aiko and Ella Mai, Lennox‘s music is moreso rooted in the Neo-Soul, classicist R&B and Soul traditions.
 

Her sound and style is not as contemporary/alternative as the aforementioned nor quite Hip-Hop adjacent to truly break through into Rhythmic/Urban listening circles.

 

This is why her music is more appreciated by Urban AC (‘Soul Train’) audience as opposed to BET. 

 

Also, I know this is completely subjective because she objectively is a better and stronger vocalist than SZA, Ella Mai, Summer Walker etc. but her ‘tone’ isn’t conventionally attractive.

H.E.R makes Urban AC appealing music

 

I think Ari just needs better songwriters for her type of voice, for the singles anyways. Pressure was a cute lil radio jingle but that's it. It's also not bad to switch it up every blue moon style wise, everything doesn't have to sound exactly like a 70s Soul song.

 

Ari Lennox very much happened in all the right spaces. 

I tried getting tickets to her tour this year and it was completely sold out. I’d say she’s doing just fine. Ari’s demographic knows Ari. 

Because happening is much harder than people realize

First the rip off name that makes people find a real artist, not Ari.

obviously these aren’t earth-shattering numbers, but clearly she has a dedicated fanbase willing to show up where it really counts. a steady core base is worth a lot more than a hit song in the long run 

 

stick to making threads about H.E.R.’s latest certifications or whatever instead
