Rewrite the era: Bionic

Featured Replies

"Bionic" is iconic in stan world as the symbol term for a flop era. But it didn't have to be that way. With different singles and rollout, Bionic could have been a hit era for Christina, rather than the beginning of the end of her pop career.

If you were her manager at the time, how would you have handled the era?

January 2010: release "Lift Me Up" as a radio single in conjunction with her highly-acclaimed performance on the Hope for Haiti telethon, as well as a digital download of the live version.

March 2010: release buzz singles "Birds of Prey" and "Glam" to build anticipation around the new alt electronica sound of the era

April 2010: release "Monday Morning" as the official lead single of the era

June 2010: release "Woohoo feat Nicki Minaj" as official second single + music video on album release week

August 2010: 3rd single "I Am" leading into fall

November 2010: final single "You Lost Me feat Bruno Mars"

lead: you lost me

second: lift me up

third: not myself tonight

WOOHOO OUT

We were robbed of “Desnúdate (remix feat Pitbull)” :giraffe:

Scrap it altogether.

Moves Like Jagger - release.

Feel This Moment - release.

Say Something - release.

Retire without a big flop era.

whew. global smash

Album sequencing and single choices being better could have done this era a LOT of favors.

1. Bionic

2. Prima Donna

3. Woohoo

4. Not Myself Tonight

5. Desnudate

6. Elastic Love

— Interlude —

7. Sex For Breakfast

8. You Lost Me

9. Lift Me Up

10. I Am

— Interlude —

11. Birds Of Prey

12. Monday Morning

13. Glam

14. My Girls

15. Vanity

Bionic, February 2010 — promo single with NMT-esque video as a buzz single to start the era

Prima Donna, March 2010 with a feature

Woo Hoo, June 2010

You Lost Me, fall 2010

Scrap her GHs and drop Bionic, on that date instead.

"Not Myself Tonight" was the PERFECT lead single choice. It's explosive, in your face, high-octane, etc. This is evident in how strongly radio supported it at first. What completely killed it was the music video. So, I'd change up the music video entirely to avoid comparisons to other artists.

Then I'd add extra songs and split the album into two CDs to improve the track order while also doubling sales (so Bionic would at least go platinum)

Then, create a futuristic music video for "WooHoo" with Nicki as she was just coming up at the time. Would've been a pop moment.

Lastly, save "You Lost Me" as a fall/winter ballad single much like "Hurt" was.

Leak songs for Promo: NMT & Little Dreamer (Give GP two tastes of Bionic)

1st single: Monday Morning (Video: Futuristic Hawaii beach town)

2nd single: Glam (Video: Paris Fashion Week 3010 )

3rd single: Woohoo (Video: Space Night Club Ala Guardians and Star Wars)

4th single: Lift Me Up (Video: Post Apocalyptic/ Climate Change video)

The only thing I would have changed is to release this album 5 years earlier.  I think the long waits really hurt her career.  She should have done something like:

Debut: 1999

Stripped:2001

Back to Basics: 2003

Bionic: 2005

Lead : Not Myself Tonight

Promo : Bionic

2nd : Woohoo

3rd : You Lost Me

End era with Vanity music video

Monday Morning as the lead single, the rest is history!

NMT with a different video - February/march 2010

Monday Morning - May, a new single before an album release, gets universally acclaimed

Glam - July

Lift Me Up - September/October as a fall/winter single

Impossible. The era was doomed. Both its concepts were not commercially viable. The original, more experimental one wouldn't have produced any hits in the era of Dr Luke's radio domination and the second concept of bringing in tired r&b producers to try to make electropop music was also a tank waiting to happen next to Katy, Kesha, Gaga and Rihanna.

If I were to replan it anyway, I would probably just stick with the original concept and release

Monday Morning - lead single

Birds Of Prey - promo single

I Am - second single

Bionic - third single with album release

You Lost Me - final single

Still would have flopped but the critics would have liked it and her reputation wouldn't have been ruined. But tbh, I think she loves those tacky tracks she added and very willingly relinquished her original concept in favor of the more cheeky, camp iteration of it so... the final album is probably what she wanted to put out. And I love it too tbh

1. Scrap all the material minus the ballads and go to Darkchild , Timbaland , Max Martin & Dr pUke for electro smashes.

2.Avoid all Gaga aesthetics

3.Radio Payola

4.Release the album in 2007 (scrapping GH)

1st single: Vanity

2nd single: All I Need

3rd single: WooHoo

4th single: Stronger Than Ever

1. Make the album short, cut all the unnecessary fillers

2. Go for a different aesthetic, that whole futuristic retro dominatrix was not it.

3. Hire new, hotter producers. Maybe Calvin Harris or RedOne.

4. Make a short, hot, fast up-tempo, fresh electro pop album

5. Keep your vocals light, sultry and sexy

6. Include a Mid-tempo electronic ballad produced by David Guetta.

7. Keep Gaga out of your mouth.

You Lost Me could have saved the era a bit, but it still baffles me they thought releasing it on a Summer was the perfect idea. Also I still cackle at her promoting it on American Idol and the song not even being available for purchase on iTunes . Oh Christina... :toofunny3:

Then she divorced got drunk, gained weight and decided she was over everything. I wish she would have been commited and promoted it like P!nk did with other projects that didn't start the gratest, but eventually found and audience.

It wasn’t at all truly. It was not what was promised to fans & very generic. You can’t be gone for 4-5 years & comeback with such a lackluster lead.

1. Monday morning

2. Glam

3. Bionic

Were much stronger leads that actually represented the album.

I agree with this. Bad mistakes after the next & the next. They should have stuck with “Woohoo” as the second single with Nicki & push it hard.

It was certainly not the perfect lead single choice, as evidenced by how it played out. Back at the time, the charts and the gp were still very radio focused and attached to the standard pop song formula. NMT is a solid electro-pop song, but it lacked any hook and the chorus felt barely there. For a comeback single after a four year wait, it was just nowhere near the bar she needed to cross.

Gaga was able to break radio and the gp with Euro electro-pop because she still adhered to the traditional pop formula of hooks and explosive choruses. NMT probably would've been better received a few years later when the gp was more accustomed to EDM.

This is the correct answer. BIONIC should have been released in late 08'
