Legally SM can't create a single contract of longer than 7 years, because the law in Korea changed some time in 2013-2014 after TVXQ/JYJ's lawsuit and other legal problems with entertainment/slave contracts, which forced the government to restrict to a maximum of 7 years. However, EXO Tao and Luhan's lawsuits (and Jessica's book) revealed that SM gets around this by making their artists sign extensions instead. A mess. Edited June 1, 2023 by Zack

This entire situation is weird Yeah that timing is weird, but it's probably strategic, since they've hired lawyers and must have gotten advice. It seems like this has been building behind the scenes for months. Kai's sudden enlistment seems even weirder now too, with this news.
BigBangStan Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 EXO without Baekhyun will feel so weird to me, he is literally the face of the group.

I wonder if the boys had agreed to do the comeback as part of some kind of bargaining piece. SM was sitting on an easy 2M+ seller but they didn’t want to give their artists a bigger cut

Fadedlights Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 Damn that exo news SHOOK ME. Can't believe we're having exo drama in 2023. Ppl always talked about how SM is able to keep legacy acts around compared to other companies but not even. If anything they have groups that are ok still performing without all the original members. Ie. Super Junior and TVXQ. SNSD is barely active. And now EXO is falling apart. Legacy means **** if this is how they do it lol
Sugden Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 this is so random cause they showed no signals of this i wish they had waited for after the comeback tho

lgaga1fan Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 There must be dealings with CBX that weren't fulfilled considering those three are the ones that left... this is all very weird
lgaga1fan Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 EXO basically has to disband now if this fully doesn't get figured out idek what to think
Fadedlights Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 I feel like it would be a huge disservice if exo continues. Would be like the whole TVXQ situation... Are we really going to have the group without two of its main vocals and the other main vocal left who cares more about acting... I know Suho gives management track vibes but I hope him and the other members don't just stay at SM. A group with just him, DO, Chanyeol, Kai, and Sehun would be bad af

Plus, many of them can remain active as soloists (or debut solo), so there's still value in the EXO brand that SM will not let go of easily. Suho, Chanyeol, D.O, Kai, Sehun (and Lay).

I agree that there's definitely value but Kai wont be back for a long time, theyre missing 2/3 vocal backpieces from their ENTIRE discog, D.O. hardly seems interested in being an idol... just doesn't seem feasible at all. Its giving F(X) and TVXQ but worse.
LuneMon Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 Maybe this is why kai was so frustrated about the enlistment stuff, he knew it was going to be the last comeback with the full group. This is so sad. I hate SM.
MonsterNavy Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 SM says that there are outside forces approaching SM artists and offering false/incorrect legal advice and making suggestions that the artists can ignore their exclusive obligations and sign new contracts. SM plans to file legal action. https://twitter.com/tmikpop/status/1664081828444004352?s=61&t=0dYeKWXArrO353_EVtZ5zg not "outside forces" sm be serious for once challenge 3

Given the precedent SNSD have set (with Tiffany, Sooyoung and Seohyun returning despite no longer being in the company), it is a (very faint) possibility which is why I included him.
