Pop radio is pay to play. Interscope used their dark Rain On Me budget on buying VMA awards and a Grammy

I can see in principle where you and @Pop Art are coming from, and if you asked me 10 years ago I might have agreed but Judas managed what, almost 200,000 copies in 2 days fuelled by that hype? Billboard said it would have needed at least double that to have debuted at #1. Could TEOG have? It didn’t quite manage 300,000 and had near enough a full week of sales tracking right? Even if we account for a deficit as it was an iTunes countdown single I can’t see that gap to #1 being bridged. A Top 3 placing in itself was a slay.
 

Regardless of the chart talk, what I will say on its 11th birthday is that the era was enriched by Judas regardless of its chart run and it partnered well with Edge as a Yin and Yang (probably why she wanted to promote another single with You and I later) — it wouldn’t have been the same without it, and gave the era its real hit MV. It’s like wishing Xtina skipped Dirrty and went straight to Beautiful. A moment most pleasing etc.

But the fact remains that they have boycotted her from the top 10. ROM barely peaked at 10, probably because of ariana, the radio queen

Yeah that's unfortunately true. It is frustrating but I think there were many factors leading up to it. After ARTPOP she hasn't really released any "pop radio friendly" songs. She dropped a Jazz record, went on an image rehab era, then came back with Perfect Illusion (one of my favorite songs ever but not radio friendly at all) which had a horrible reception leading to radio dropping faster than Gags dropped Chromatica. They were later on hesitant to play Million Reasons (a country ballad from Lady Gaga mind you) and its mediocre streaming performance didn't help back then despite being doing well digitally until the Super Bowl smashery forced them into playing it. The Cure also struggled to reach Top 20 despite being more "trendy" and according to those leaked documents, Interscope was focusing more on streaming with it. Finally, it took an Oscars performance for them to play Shallow - and it still barely sneaked into the Top 20- despite being one of the biggest streaming smashes of the last few years. 

 

On top of all of this, Pop radio is still factually sexist/ageist so it's even harder for Gags to get smash hits there now. She's not the only victim either, Taylor is also struggling on Pop radio although she's constantly the #1 most streamed female artist.

 

At the end of the day if she can keep getting hits on HAC/AC radio and does well on streaming she'll be more than fine.

The problem was the Easter religious  controversy was not the helpful kind after an already controversial lead — it was the kind that leads to radio dropping you like a hot potato and people switching off, and Gaga was at peak exposure, so there weren’t much that could be done except keeping the foot firmly down on the promotional peddle. Then The Edge of Glory as a droplet hit that GP sweet spot and took off sooner than than the label expected, so tactics were changed and they moved on without Gaga even knowing and being in the middle of the promotional run.
 

That whole era really was 100mph holding on for dear life as a stan. And despite all that Judas was still the right call, the music video is her most viewed of the era, and it’s appreciated today for its nerve, its gall and its gumption. She didn’t have the next generation of artists stanning for no reason, and it’s **** like Judas heading up one of the buzziest pop albums of all time that did it. 
 

As an aside I think TEOG did what it needed to do and reached its max commercial success; Judas never happening wouldn’t have made it a #1. The big stadium torch songs had the best GP response; the ASIB seeds were already being sown. The image just needed to be changed to get there.

 

And now Hold My Hand is coming to (hopefully) carry on that legacy.

 

 

it is disappointing ROM didn't do better on Pop tbh. Gaga will forever suffer from bad callouts that cut her songs before they can truly flourish on radio.

American radio wont touch her with a 10ft stick, hence why she should completely stop pandeting to US and drop European smashes 

All of Ariana's singles peaked at #1 on pop radio and then ROM peakef at #10 or #11. Hence why I dont get the 'but SC/xyz isnt radio friendly!!!1!1". Yeah, for American radio. Pretty sure radios around the world arent so black and white in what they do and dont play.

you are forgetting Ariana released a heavily pushed single ft. Bieber just a week before ROM was released. That definitely hurt ROM in the long run, radio was sick of Ariana at that point.

I don’t really agree with this narrative. Radio soured on Gaga after Born This Way. She gave them a moderate hit with Million Reasons, a radio friendly song with The Cure, and #1 hits with Shallow and Rain on Me. The fact that radio didn’t make Rain on Me a #1 hit with a ton of longevity is just pure ageism and bias at this point. She has been giving radio hits and radio friendly songs for five years at this point. They just don’t play her.

This would've been a valid argument had Positions not gone #1 on pop radio, but it did. Radio wasnt sick of her.

Gaga should sue radios tbh.

Nah, they spam Ariana and Dua. They just hate Gaga since ARTPOP. 

I honestly feel like we’re far away enough from 08/09 that she only needs to do Just Dance, Poker Face, and Bad Romance at concerts. LoveGame, Paparazzi, Telephone, and Alejandro were HUGE and (somewhat, in their own way) iconic, but at some point you just have to let iconic hits go. Madonna and Britney forego some of their biggest hits in their shows because they have too many, and it’s time for Gaga to do the same. We really don’t need all 7 The Fame/Monster singles at every show 14 years later.
