I don't really agree, everything can happen with awards these days, some contenders can start weak and then peak at the right time and vice versa, we saw that with Stewart-Chastain and also Yeoh last year seemed to not have chances when Blanchett was sweeping Trifecta, BAFTA and all the regionals looking undeniable.. TCP is still a period drama story, more serious than 'Wicked' tho when it comes to themes, social and racial issues, the original one got several Oscars nominations, including Oprah for acting.

 

However, I'm just glad we don't have to deal with this movie as competition regardless.

EEAAO’s undeniable stature sweeping pre-cursor’s left and right, helped pushed Yeoh over Blanchett, also the case w JLC. Cate would’ve easily won in another other recent year. No one curr about Spencer given its complete shut-out at the BAFTA’s & its sole BA Oscar nom, which was basically her consolation prize given how the industry practically shut out film as a whole. TCP still would compete in Comedy/Musical regardless of how much of “drama piece” it’s viewed as so the main competitor would’ve been The Wicked. despite the original getting 13 noms across, it still got zero wins. the film just isn’t as win-competitive as the other more academy friendly original highbrow films, the same could be said for next year w the current release slates
