Background: Britney had a standard three album teen pop contract. Her label didn't believe she'd last and they just wanted to cash in like any normal teen pop contract.

Since Spice Girls/BSB were phenomenons, there was a market for a solo artists. Three females were pushed.

1) Robyn had two cute hits but was not going to be a teen pop girl

2) Christina Aguilera was pushed with the mulan soundtrack but the song and album flopped primarily due to simple economics (single - Whitney/Mariah and Celine were in their prime and no one asked for a teen version - album people were not ready to embrace that type of story).

3) Natalie Imbruglia was a one hit wonder that didn't have a brand. Her label copied the sound with I will be there.

Britney Spears was meant to have another lead but BOMT was undeniably a debut song. Max Martin wrote BOMT for TLC because the industry got word that they were making a comeback album after their infamous banktrupcy. They passed as the message goes against their songs like No scrubs. BSB passed (FOOLISH as this would have been perfect for them). Britney flipped it from Max begging for a woman's attention to a naughty innocent girl pining for her man's attention but with a little more suggestiveness.

Because the song was suggestive and Jive knew they needed to sell to a lot of kids they opted for an animated visuals where Britney is pining after a Jake while spinning around on a record player. Mid way a bunch of monsters come to defeat her and she dons a power ranger type getup and defeats them and transforms to the real life Britney at the end of the song with a cute lil winning dance.

Jive actually gave Nigel Dick a 1M budget for this. It seems corny and stupid but would have worked for kids in the late 90s. She was embarrassed and aggressively told Nigel that it was the worst bleeping idea she's heard and came up with the school girl concept. Jive wasn't sure about it so they slashed her budget from 1M to 300k (which seems like a lot but it was not) because if this risque concept didn't work then they'd have to reshoot the video and this would put her in debt to the label which many artists have done for different reasons. With their original concept, they expected a top 10 hit and an album to sell 3-5M in the US which meant around 10M WW since pop was in.

Remember, she is a student of the greats: Her top 6 influences artistically were 1) Janet Jackson 2) Madonna 3) Michael Jackson 4) Cher 5) Paula Abdul and 6) Prince

Her concept was obviously legendary and gamechanging and that top 10 hit they aimed for became a #1 hit WW and her album went 14x platinum not 3x platinum.

Of the singles released, BOMT with her concept and You drive me crazy (remix - the label wanted the original released) were the more successful singles which gave Britney and Larry Rudolph leverage. Not only did her concept become a phenomenon and game changer, the singles she pushed were more successful. She never really like Sometimes or From the bottom of my broken heart.

Jive immediately pushes for a 2nd album to strike while the iron is hot and Britney has less than two weeks to record Oops I did it again mainly while on the road for BOMT. She records it and she and Larry realize that THIS IS THEIR MOMENT to renegotiate. Instead of turning it in on time they hold the work hostage (artists are supposed to submit a rough version for the label to determine if it's good enough to release and then figure out the budget for promotion).

Jive wanted to release an album called Millennium 2000 or something related to this to make her album the first big release of the millennium. Due to Larry and Britney playing hard ball they forced Jive's hand and this was the new setup.

Original set up: Three standard teen pop albums with normal points/percentages

New set up: Seven albums with essentially top budget and veteran's rates

Britney and Larry knew that neither side could anticipate the success and records broken with BOMT so both sides end up making more money and it wasn't worth trying to be greedy with BOMT and instead the other 6 albums on the extended contract would have top funds.

Jive tried to trick Britney into giving her lavish gifts, vehicles and even a home (even though she was mainly on tour) so that she'd not think about or being a position to change her contract. Larry knew to decline those offers and I think she accepted an upgraded hotel per diem but that's it.

BOMT became the best selling teenage album of all time and made her the best selling teenage artist of all time but also she tied two big record:

1) she and Stevie Wonder are the youngest female and male to have a #1 song and album. (Lorde was the closest)

2) she, Whitney Houston and Carole King have the highest certified debut female albums in history. Each album is 14x platinum and Whitney and Carole had their cert updates earlier this decade. BOMT I(the album has not been updated by RIAA since 2004/5). Whether on its own or post biopic or something else (not so good happening), BOMT will be recertified 15x platinum and reclaim the title solo.

Jive did not have a plan for her career as an adult pop artist.

So, the January release ended up as a May 2000 release. May 16 is also Janet Jackson's birthday. I'll let you figured that one out.

While BOMT was mega successful it was kind of BOMT + a bunch of bubblegum pop songs with little direction. The goal for Oops was to make a definitive teen pop album that defined the sound of the time while being cohesive and building off of her successs and keeping the momentum going. Mission accomplished. The Oops era is where she made the most money.

She had less than two years to go and both parties wanted to make sure she released the third album before she turned twenty to hold her title as best selling teenage artist in case someone else came in (I mean Hannah Montana could have done it tbh if sales weren't in a slump by then). You never know.

Britney is the album where SHE drove the direction to make a coming of age transition album. It had never been done before. Why? because teen females didn't get to that transition album successfully.

Note: Britney is the first teen female to successfully transition from a multiplatinum teen act to a multiplatinum adult pop act.

80s: Janet's teen albums flopped but Control (her first album away from her father was successful and she was 20 during that era).

Debbie Gibson and Tiffany had a 2 album run and aged out and flopped as adults. Debbie had a 3x and 2x platinum album run (first to have multiple multiplatinums) and Tiffany had a 4x platinum and platinum run (highest certified teen album for a time).

90s: Brandy (4x and 5x platinum teen albums and never went multiplatinum again as an adult), Aaliyah two 2x platinum albums and then following her passing her 3rd album hit 2x platinum (two months after Britney went 4x platinum), Monica two 3x platinum albums, Leann rimes had a 6x platinum, 3x platinum and 2x platinum run as a teen but her adult albums didn't go multiplatinum.

Britney is where she visually led the pack and coneptually had her songs and image match more. BOMT was lolita innocence, OIDA was the good girl with a wink and Britney was teen angst meets precocious come hither sexuality in the song as well as the visual...with less suggestion and more in your face.

With this transition album, she perfected the naughty/innocent innocent/naughty aesthetic.

Jive like many labels know that the longer an artist remains on a label the more money and more demands and control they want so while Jive played ball and wanted to help Britney make history they were also ready to sabotage her as well so that her final albums on the contract were worthless. THIS HAPPENS all the and most recently happened with Drake.

While she becomes overexposed, they are pushing her ex boyfriend to go solo since his boyband reached it's time. They encourage him to do what he inevitably did and that forever popped her pop bubble and made people dislike her and tarnished her princess image. PR companies would be paid millions annually to protect an image. Why would Jive be ok with another act on the same label tarnishing Britney's image so that she's seen in a different less protected light...because that drives the sales down which drives the success down which drives the play for more control down.

They put all their eggs in his basket so that he could cosplay Michael Jackson (Pharrell confirmed half the album were MJ reject tracks) and match George Michael's success with Faith as a diamond album with four of five #1s. While the album was successful and good, it didn't reach half of George Michael's success and didn't even reach Britney's 3rd album sales. They blamed Britney because the two broke up early in 2002 and were supposed to pretend to still be together until right before his new single was ready to launch (late summer). It got leaked and then there was this five month gap which Justin couldn't build momentum off of and instead of blaming the wack first single for not hitting top 10 let alone #1 or driving a #1 album they felt the early announcement of the break up was the cause. What was supposed to happen was people would notice they were not out in public as much and then spend all summer speculating if they were together and then Justin could control the narrative coincidentally before he launched his album to benefit.

Jive and Justin campaigned heavily to use Britney for sales during the album playing coy innocent southern broken hearted man for the Barbara Walters style interviews but then going fo shizz fo shizz on urban interviews talking about bleeping her and the sexual positions they did on each other so that he got more urban spins.

In August/Sept 2002 before he launched or write after he launched his solo project she announced a 6 month break 1) she was overexposed and any additional exposure would hurt her business wise and 2) she needed a break and 3) while she was able to rework her contract to be more fair there was no guarantee that the 3rd album would work. It did or that any subsequent albums would work so she wanted time to reevaluate how she'd reintroduce herself.

Part 2... the shift.

3 weeks into her 6 month break Justin is out there exploiting her and rush releasing Cry me a river since Like I love to be MJ underperformed and then the campaign (WITH THE AID OF JIVE) was to exploit Britney for Justin's gain.

While BSB were the top selling acts and Britney was the top selling female solo act with R. Kelly as the top selling male act (ew)...Britney learned a grave lesson in how misogyny works. It didn't matter that she was more successful than N sync...Justin was pushed to become a pop star that had blue eyed soul and could be played on r&b and hip hop stations and become the new George Michael. Now the sales didn't match, and while acclaimed, more people illegally downloaded the album than actually purchased. Ha. Then Usher (a rival) comes in the next year and achieves exactly what they wanted Justifed to achieve with 4 or 5 #1s, a 10M diamond album which went 14x platinum due to streams and 20M+ sales WW. lol

Justin had access to all top producers and writers. He gave Jive what they wanted and it was time for Britney to developed her first adult pop album. Well, all of the sudden in 2003 she loses access to top writers and producers (mainly the teen pop ones) and they have writers block and or are busy. While this was a sabotage attempt, this ended up being a good thing because she didn't need to rely on teen pop producers/writers as a crutch and it pushed her to work with newer producers and write more.

While the Kiss was a gimmick, Madonna saw what they were doing and decided to help Britney out and she too needed Britney's help as she just endured her first non platinum studio album in 20 years. Britney came, she saw, she conquered with her 4th #1 album, a grammy win and just an amazing journey to START her path to Janet (control/rhythm nation/Janet)/Madonna (Like a virgin/erotica/ray of light) status. She became the first teen female to successfully transition from a multiplatinum teen to an adult.

THen after being burnt out, sabotaged, hurt and vulnerable she became prey to K fed and she wanted to settle down. Right time. Wrong person. She launches her legendary fragrance line that makes her Elizabeth Taylor's counterpart for celebrity fragrances and planned to settle down and have kids and if pop stardom was done for her than she'd just endorse products and get into other ventures.

Keep in mind when she and Justin broke up...Jive planned for them to get back together a year later (it was going to help him to appear single on his debut) and they had what Jessica and Nick Lachey used on the table to film a wedding and newlywed era. Britney wouldn't get back with Justin though. He broke up with her and then Jive told him to get back with her until the album single were released and then she broke with him and wore the infamous 'dump him' shirt.

While she settles down, the likes of PCD and early Rihanna take over. PCD had songs that Britney would have made a hit but then she would have overdone it. Jay z attempted to push Rihanna into a bajan Beyonce (showing Beyonce's impact just after one album [facepalm] route but Rihanna didnt have the chops or moves). Jay z masterfully pushed Rihanna in a pop direction to fill the void of Britney.

This goes on and we know what happens between 2005-2007.

Re-worked contract:

album #1 1999 BOMT - standard

albums 2-4: 2000-2003 Oops, Britney and In the zone - successes

Britney's image seems beyond repairable but Jive is sneakily releasing to end her contract.

album #5: 2004 GHMP was successful but Jive only wanted MP as a single and as Britney JUST noted wanted Do somethin to be pushed and with a video.

album #6: while pregnant they release her first remix album which is her 6th album on the contract. No promotion. No single and it flops but Jive is one step closer to ending her contract when she is in a space where it seems impossible to come back from.

album #7: Blackout. This is where top producers didn't want to take credit as they KNEw the album would flop. Timbaland wanted to take total control of it to appear as if he saved her. Jive only gave her EP responsibilities because no major producer at the time wanted to attach their name. Luckily, swedish pop and urban US producers supported her vision and a masterpiece was created.

The demos were leaked a month before the album release and she lost custody of her kids weeks beforehand and that was after a disastrous VMA performance.

JIve was ELAAAAAAAAATED that this was happening because this album was the last on the contract and would torpedo any renegotiation plans and they could easily just drop her which would have been quintessential of labels to use an act for what they are good for and abandoned them at their worst - it's business.

Well, Blackout redefined pop and took the current trend (urban pop - Fergie, Nelly F, Beyonce, Justin, rihanna) and made electro dance anthemic pop the big thing for a few years (Blackout, Gaga and others up until the 21 era shifted things again).

The album went platinum and had three hits. It is now 2x platinum and songs are getting healthy streams and on many best of lists and inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame music library.

THIS WAS NOT THEIR PLAN.

Her reworked contracted ended with a career saving album setting her up for a new one.

Next contract: Comeback/Legacy era

Her evil father reupps for a five album contract deal:

album #1: Circus

album #2: The singles collection

album #3: 2nd remix album

album #4: Femme fatale

album #5: Britney Jean

in August 2014, Jamie reups a new contract. the amount of albums is questionable. Most speculate at least 3 (likely not 7 but possibly 4 or 5).

the rest tbd but I hope if she had a 3 album deal then one is a 3rd and final GH and the other is a biopic soundtrack or a rarities unreleased collection to end the contract.

So yes.

She's had like 4 comebacks (2003, 2008, 2021, 2023) and I hope she gets one more and will officially hold the title as the princess of pop/Queen of comebacks.

So many sabotage attempts and Jive used her ex to tank her brand and I forgot to mention her parents were feeding her label and paps information on her whereabouts and getting paid on the side as she cut them off financially.

She has been betrayed by so many...and still she rises.

My sources are from people who worked in the industry and my own experience. In her prime there were solid sources.

1. The main insider accurately predicted Britney's 3rd album was only going to sell 4.2m when it was at 3.8m as Jive was no longer going to push it much further and while now it's at 4. At the time it stalled at 4.2m it reminded me of when 50 cent was beefing with a rapper named The Game. Well 50 signed him and when they started beefing 50 publicly stated that The game was only going to sell 500k more and then he'd never do big numbers again. The label sabotaged.

i've found it hard to find out how much influence she had over the third album (there seems to be more consensus that she was involved on ItZ and blackout) but i've always had the impression that you can hear her voice a bit more in it, even the max songs written for her seem to be from a more sympathetic and personal position

Well, she had alot of it and then they changed it last minute.

Initially Crossroads was going to have a soundrack and 'Britney' was going to have songs that she wrote minus two but then they decided to cancel the soundtrack and add more Max songs on what was released.

She conceptualized the bridge between teen (fun, bubbly and also added teen angst [lonely, let me be]) and her transition into her freshman college experimental era.

While reviews were not great for the album the concept set the path for other teen queens to successfully transition from a multiplatinum teen singer to a multiplatinum adult pop singer.

Pre-Britney

Janet Jackson almost had it but her first two albums were not even platinum/gold let alone multiplatinum and she was 20 when the Control era came out.

Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, Brandy, Monica, Aaliyah, Leann rimes unfortunately couldn't do it.

Britney achieves it with BOMT/Oops/Britney as a teen and ITZ, BO, Circus eventually FF as an adult pop star.

Since Britney, Miley, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato have succeeded. Each lady has been influenced by Britney. Ariana was 20 during her debut album era.

I don't care if Britney doesn't record again but it would be nice to have 1 rarities release to bring a formal conclusion to her discography

and in fairness the reviews were always a binfire for any young woman at that time releasing a pop record, they all got dragged off of a truck for not releasing a strokes album or something. i think britney s/t is good rather than great but yr definitely right, it executes that pivot so well

Lastly, while I have my own experience and connection to legit insiders sometimes if you pay attention and gather data you can put the puzzle pieces together.

I had a hard time believing that Jive was against her during her comeback era until Joseph Khan made that comment about wanting more money for the Womanizer video and they made a reference to wonder why they'd give more money to a crazy btch.

Well, if you recall in the For the record doc there was a label meeting scene where Britney was uncomfortable and the execs couldn't even fake happiness for the fact that Womanizer hit #1. They were begrudingly like oh, so Womanizer hit #1 10 years after BOMT...

While they succeeded in making her adult pop albums have less valuable for renewing her contract once her image went out of control and they were releasing greatest hits and remixes during a time where Britney didn't want to or could not promote to run out her contract Blackout was supposed to BOMB.

They HATED the fact that their plan backfired and Blackout saved Britney and set her up for her comeback album. THIS explains why that scene in FTR was so dry.

Don't ya'll expect a label to be happy and ecstatic even faking enthusiasm for the cameras when their artist overcame something almost impossible for any other pop star to achieve.

I didn't believe half of the tea i received over the years but then you live a little and you realize that anyting is possible and there's always someone new to make money off of. 20 years ago I would have never thought a label would try so hard to sabotage an act because they make money off of them but it's beyond wanting ot keep control and power...it's about dominion.

While Drake lost his lawsuit, he faced a similar situation of internal sabotage at the end of his contract.

Mariah infamously did as well on her last two albums although that was more obvious since she was divorcing the CEO.

2022 - another hit (possibly the last, hopefully not)

2023 - NYT best selling memoir

2025 - rights for the biopic were chosen

2027/8/9 - 30 years after recording her debut album/releasing her debut single/releasing her debut album her #1 box office biopic

2028/9/2030 - Award winning broadway play

If no biopic soundtrack, b10, ep, GH volume 3, rarities or unreleased songs are in the future then that's ok. I hope so but that's fine.

This closeout era needs to be done properly and I hope the rollout is respectful, powerful and poetic in a sense.

@slw84 Thank you for writing this sis, I can definitely see the label trying to play games with her. She was seen as disposable by the industry and tbf she's been underrated even in the pop music discussion places up until the Free Britney movement.

I actually saw a recent interview with one of the old Jive executives where he was saying Slave was Britney's idea. The label was keen on releasing another teen pop and milk that for as long as they could, but Britney was adamant to go for a more adult sound.

It's always funny to me when people say Britney was puppet when we have multiple credible sources saying she was the driving force behind her career. Sure, she might've not written as much or produced, but when it came to sound and image, Britney knew iconic.
The Rolling Stones cover is another example, she's the one who locked the door and tied her shirt and told David Chapelle to shoot (lmfao)

I also hate how a lot of the GP says she was always controlled and they don't realise the cship started in 2008
