I never get the Janet comparisons when Bey has been marketed as a VOCALISR first. Im sorry, but Ms Whisper was the template for Britney, not Bey.

Yep, if you literally just watch them both Janet/Britney are clones.

Beyonce has respect for Janet like most black girls born in the late 70s/80s because during their teen years because Janet was their Madonna if that makes sense.

Whitney/Celine

Janet/Madonna

Tina Turner / Cher

Aretha Franklin / Barbra Streisand

then Mariah shook things up as the first MPG that was biracial and saw massive global success and yes her race was discussed a LOT back then publicly.

Beyonce is like THANOS, she took inspiration from everyone who she loved and naturally used bits to create her own space, men and women, musical and non musical. I told yall about the Happy Face run from Survivor that is a nod to a scene in "The Craft"

Can we as a community be loud for once and call out this type of bs scam? This is such an unnecessary dick move, like cmon.

The Janet stans are heated :chick2:

All those old divas' stans hate Beyoncé until it's time to proclaim their fave is Beyoncé's inspiration.

Beyoncé and Janet are vastly different, she doesn't sing like her, doesn't perform like her so I really don't get why her fans try so hard. She's no Tina or Diana Ross who are much more what Beyoncé is, women wise.

We have to bring down Beyonce to boost up Janet for what exactly?

The janitors have been trying to humble Beyoncé ever since JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE humiliated her at the SB

It wasn't until very recently that JT even got the backlash he deserved from that incident but they have been mad at the wrong person for DECADES now

In knowing the intricacies of their stories (highs, lows, hardships, and triumphs), there should really be so much overlap in their fanbases and I actually think there is. Two Black female forces in Pop/R&B who have bulldozed barriers.

At the same time, I do think there is a small but persistent corner of the JanFam that are irked by how Bey's ascend literally tracks with the most challenging time in Janet's journey.

2004 for JJ = Super Bowl fiasco, for Bey = on a rocket to the top. Neither diva's circumstance had much to do with the other at the time, but it's easy to see where a) the jealous few's hate for the new "it girl" stems from (bizarre as it is) and b) how a defensive/ill-informed Hive may take it too far downing a diva whose literal everything gave way for Bey to be who she is.

Bey is my everything and the one act I have actually lived their ascend to legend status (my older legends I "met" as icons/legends). However, IMO she has had the luxury of innovating on a blueprint that was well set and cemented before DC even released their first single. A blueprint set by the likes of Janet and similar.

So, in short (lol), I think there should be more harmony all-round in stan-land when it comes to some of our divas.

The Janet beef should make sense to the Hive, they had/have the SAME exact beef with Rihanna lol.

Janet only went inactive competition wise because she got blacklisted or she likely had one or two big mainstream eras left during the DIL-IASF time period.

Beyoncé is currently dancing at the Oscars gold party probably with Jeff Bezos while I sit here contemplating why I just spent $1500 on a new laptop while watching the Oscars.

Notchu posting this of all videos. She's one of my fave Beyonce reactors cause she loves how fierce Beyonce is and always forgets she's supposed to focusing just on the vocals which is pretty funny. But she ALWAYS gets ate up in the comments for not understanding any racial context. In that video you posted she got lit up in the comments having no idea who the mothers of murdered black men were.

I actually never put that time of their lives into comparative perspective, but Beyonce literally joined the Top 5 American Anthems of all-time that same night opening up the 2004 SuperBowl. :rip: Come to think of it, I remember an article saying that they offered B the choice between the anthem and the Halftime Show and she chose anthem. :rip: If that's the truth, Janet wasn't even first choice. I now think of the situation like A Star Is Born when Bradley Cooper's star begins to fade and the resentment towards Lady Gaga begins to show. Between her vocal gifts, age, clear admiration from her brother, and a garden gnome of a boyfriend resentful after having all of his songs cut from Dangerously In Love, Janet probably felt disrespected. It didn't help that garden gnome started pitting them against each other. Janet was also barred from the Grammy ceremony where Beyonce won FIVE and performed with Prince (while they let Justin Timberlake go?)?? It's all making sense. That comment about being forced to enter show business as a means to make money instead of a self-love for music was probably the most flammable gasoline known to man. :celestial5:

Big grain of salt here. From a purely neutral standpoint, the only things Beyonce could be resentful of Rihanna for were her age, the perceived attention Jay-Z gave her (dropping a bunch of other female artists at this time didn't help), maybe the amount of radio hits, and her team running with an affair rumor to raise Rihanna up to a competitive level she could not reach on her own at that time. Completely different musical skillset, can't dance, both use a variety of different musical collaborators, and she didn't get a #1 album until Unapologetic.

I do think 20YO and Discipline would've been much bigger. For "Feedback" and "Call Me" to go top 30 in a CBS radio blacklisting / MTV video blacklisting tells me all I needed to know. "Rock With U" with that one-take video would've been big too.

Not the same thing at all imo.

Beyoncé was never pitted against Janet by all magazines and Beyoncé's team didn't plant news everywhere for almost half a decade that she is sleeping with Jermaine and Janet is jealous of her to raise her status. That's why a part of the Hive resented her at the time. It was not a natural comparison, it was a forced one that dogpiled on B.

And Frankly in 2004, Ciara, someone who is actually completely like Janet to a T, was also very successful somehow they mostly have ever focused on B. Even Janet seemed a bit salty a her then and only started to embrace her when she become a flop. But tbh I don't mind that so much, anyway. As awful as it sounds, Janet is not that important of a legend to me.

Pepsi Commercial:

plus Fighting Temptations, Goldmember a year before that, and these are JUST the high profile things she did in 2003 alone. By 2004, we got a solo tour, tour with Alicia & Missy, a performance with PRINCE, and a new DC album + era :jonnycat:

Now imagine if Renaissance had 1/4 of that promotion :jonny2:

Yup and that's why she gets to be where she is today. She paid her dues BIG TIME.

These new girls need to take notes. I feel like someone of them want to be current day Beyonce without putting in the DIL-4 level work (Normani 👀)

Renaissance deserved a televised performance but yeah I mostly agree :sistrens:

Things are so well kept in her team nowadays, she's probably rehearsing and we have heard nothing.

is it just me or was deadpool doing the Buckin choreo for a split second during the oscars intro :deadbanana4:

Facts!

The bolded is my #1 issue with today's crop of artists.

I refuse to become an aged hen hater lol like some older stans, but I equally cannot get my head around how so many newbie acts STAN the likes of Bey, MJ, etc and yet don't want to do a fraction of what it takes to get there. It's like they stan the end result but want to fast-track their way to it.

In the weirdest way, I don't even know if it's laziness. I think has more to do with broad industry shift that Bey herself ironically ushered in.

Stay with me lol.

IMO, with self titled, Bey ushered in the era of "no promo" and made artists skewing more mysterious en masse cool...in general.

When you then think about it, almost all of the MPGs now were teens in 2013. Some maybe even younger. So, the era of all-out promo that many of us are accustomed to seeing from Bey and acts before her is something they literally don't even know about. The Mathew promo handbook people like me see as the holy grail is a myth to them.

Much like many of us "met" the MJ's, Janet's, Mariah's, Whitney's etc as legends, Gen Z and younger are "meeting" Beyonce as a legend and all-at-once "get" that she's THE Queen but have no inricate/nuanced insights into "how" that came to Bey. IMO, they want the end result yet literally don't understand how to do it.

In slight defense of the newbies, there are many things specific to their era that make ever coming close the status of a Bey hard. Diminishing attention spans, a lack of big promo platforms, social media being more powerful than coventional mediums of yesteryear (like talkshows etc), and most of the $$$ to be made in music being in touring (so there is less literal value in performing for free on TV when the bag is at festivals and on the road).

At the same time, I still feel a bunch of these girls can simply apply the Beyonce handbook to their era (in whatever way it can be adapted) and simply put in the work. Because it's impossible to cheat the system.
