I wouldn't make this comparison. Garbo is essentially a non-factor today, largely because she was ghost af. Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, and many other stars who worked like soldiers till the deathbed, weren't publicly dismissive or scornful of their own careers, and had a strictly distant but highly respectful and fruitful relationship with decades-long fans, are all far better remembered today. Dietrich had more of her movies released on Blu-ray in one month at the height of the coronavirus pandemic than Garbo has had since the dawn of the format a decade and a half ago (a total of two); all three of the aforementioned women have titles in the Criterion Collection while Garbo has none. It doesn't help that her sound filmography is roundly panned and aged like milk; while Dietrich was bringing a new brand of sexuality and glamour to the world stage and Davis was inventing modern screen acting, Garbo was going through the motions and deadass waiting to retire. We don't want Bey to be today's Garbo, she's too important to lose the way Garbo got lost.

hm.

not sure how this turned into a "let's compare and shade garbo in comparison to her contemporaries" thing when that's not at all the point, and Garbo and Beyoncé's similarities start and end with a desire to be distant from the public, and are further contrasted by the fact that Beyoncé's choice seems to be as much a professional decision as a personal one... not because she's disillusioned with her work (on the contrary, she seems still as creatively-inspired as ever) but because she's earned a right to be far more hands off than she previously was.

I never asked that Beyoncé be today's Garbo. I merely contrasted public opinion relative to a more-or-less "reclusive" persona, one which is nearly lauded, joked about, but ultimately part of Hollywood myth and the other that is apparenly "arrogant", "goddess-like", "out of touch", etc.

There were a couple (2-3) Beyonce songs that received a nice boost during Halloween. I'm assuming one of them was Haunted, does anyone recall what the other(s) were?

idk I'm a film historian and I was grasping at straws for a goddamn converstaion because there's literally nothing else to talk about. Don't mind me. :santa:

The song is like the most Gen Z thing on the album once you get past this intro the sped version is kind of fire :wanda:

It’s severely underrated

A compilation is a visual. It wasn't even about semantics for me. I just feel like if "just the music" was her intent, why release compilations and visualizers for songs at all? That was only my point, nothing more.

Also a lot of actual videos are compilations or outtakes of concerts, shouting etc.

You can't guarantee that with just the music either. You also can't guarantee that someone who is visual will even bother.

That's true. She doesn't have to pick one or the other. And I do remember that before the teaser (another visual that depicts a song of the album and acts like a small visual of the whole album, which invalides that argument again) , some of us here being against a whole film again. It's not necessary. I just don't think a logic that imo is detrimental to artistic expression (imo ofc) needs to be put forth as a justification.

My comment was simple.

By releasing a "visual" that is PURELY a showcase of fans engaging with the song, after famously releasing NO videos for the album after famously releasing videos for EVERY song for her last 3 albums, I think Beyoncé has underlined an intent for the music reach people without guiding choreography, aesethetic, or even political input that official music videos often provide, and that in this way it becomes a more organicly felt and connected with sonic experience, free from the trappings of visual marketing. You know... like the disco era itself.

Ud be right if there werent any visuals done. They are done tho, they are also probably ready to go. The most likely outcome is that Ms Gisele is greedy and wanted the biggest offer to the point where they missed the release window and had to rearrange everything.

If ur honest with yourself, this is the most likely outcome

Totally random, but feeling really proud of Bey and also quite anxious. Stay with me lol..

She's literally venturing onto terrain few stars ever really get to. Like her longevity (on top) and as critics darling +  a current/competitive act is actually almost unrivalled besides the likes of Madonna and MJ.

Even then, as an MJ stan, I can admit where she is now (Renaissance) vs where he was at the same age (HIStory) have her even top him (from a competitive artist standpoint. He's of course the bigger overall artist and legend). So, it really is actually only Madonna who carried on with the top-tier competitive slayage into her 40s.

For as proud as I am (being a stan from early DC to now), it makes me wonder what post-Ren looks like. Becoming a legacy act is a given, but really intrigued about this decade of her career and how long she plans to "play the game". The game being ensuring her eras give Platinum certified, big capturing the zeitgeist moments (like the visual albums), and huge attached tours.

Sure she's slowing down right before us, but she gave a lot of talk when turning 40 about it not defining xyz and pushing back on society's suggestion that women should sit down as they get older. She gave the vibe of doing the opposite, which in and of itself is quite exciting.

Like, her reign is fast becoming a case of not even having legends before her that can serve as the reference point of what we can expect. It's equal parts exciting and nerve-wracking.

I was thinking about this other day!! Like it’s crazy comparing where Bey is now 25 years in and where other legends we’re at this point. Like she’s putting out some of the best work of her career where others at this point were coasting and putting out some of their worst material and lost a lot of their relevance. Like I love Mariah and she’s my second favorite artist but 24 years into her career she was putting out stuff like Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse:deadbanana4: Like it makes the contrast of what Beyoncé is doing right now even more insane. And don’t get wrong Bey is going through a natural decline commercially it’s inevitable but hers feels very different. She still feels so current and no amount of self sabotage can outdo just good music.

Highkey disagree here. The teaser having no set date for the release of the visuals shows that they had no idea when things would be ready, which is messy in and of itself. If u dont know when u want to release.sth, dont tease it.

she dropped it to create buzz so she could get a streaming deal. it was nothing more than a reassurance that there would be a visual component. i don't think she ever planned on releasing them with the record.

I think it’s even more impressive how acclaimed Renny is considering how many tracks it has. Anything longer than 11-12 tracks generally get panned for having one too many fillers

I wonder if she has many  left over disco/dance tracks from the Renaissance session? I pray to the stars for a DANCE part 2, or maybe A hive can hack her computer :gaycat1:

I’ve gotten so much fitter since Renny dropped :celestial4:

I was literally thinking about what the album outtakes sound like last night :WAP:

DJ Honey Dijon (Cozy, Alien Superstar) said that only 2/18ish of the records her and her personal team worked on made it.

SYD (Plastic Off The Sofa, OTHERSIDE) has been sending records for the last 3 years.

The-Dream has worked with her since 2008. Probably has his OWN B hard-drive.

There are definitely more disco records.

!! Like who cares about the stats. It’s so obvious some people are only stanning Beyoncé for her success. I get what she’s doing with not putting out videos immediately and making us enjoy the music but i don’t give a **** if the videos get like 2 views… i will be those 2 views:jonny:

Clearly u've never went out. There's a very special joy when ur at a party and get to enjoy songs together with ur friends and family and everybody knows and loves the songs - When BMS was played in the club and the gays went crazy, it was such an eclectic moment, something that I haven't experienced since Sweet Dreams/Telephone in my country

I just cant wait for the day that I will get here and @Mercurio will say that the tour dates are ready to be dropped.

I hope she makes some moves during Grammys’ voting period.

Right.

I know most want to light Parkwood up over these visuals, but I was so relieved to see them and Columbia do exactly what they had to do to make her competitive in this climate. Dropping the surprise release strategy, having a long pre-order window, doing the merch boxes, vinyls etc. There was a streaming strategy too when it comes to the right kind of playlisting (TTH, Apple Top Hits etc). Like, they read the room of what would be needed to make Beyonce work in the contemporary climate.

Like you said, there will come a point where the asks/demands of what a competitive act needs to do just won't work for Bey's maturing brand.

Atm she's been able to avoid being a dancing puppet on TikTok while still managing to reap the benefits of the platform. That won't be an ever and always thing. Every single won't do a Cuff It and go viral on an app she refuses to use lol, yet I also sense she won't want to promote traditionally  like it's 2007 again.

So, maybe then is when her success markers will become more about bulldozing touring records and snatching #1 albums (that go on to do whatever in the long-run).

Who knows what these new acts are, but in general I still give her one or two more eras before she morphs into a legacy act or the industry lowkey forces her hand to.

I really think we’re already there. She never really did the SM thing and to start now or next album release would seem a bit desperate imo. It’ll be interesting to watch what happens with act II, especially if it’s a genre change. Definitely think you’re right about the markers of success being tour numbers, number 1 albums and corporate partnerships.
