Madonna's Music is lowkey underrated. The fact that she managed to have a multi-week #1 hit with a French house song in the US is kinda iconic

Stats ain't lying, back then it was huge, innovative era with ahead of it's time tour Right now, it's kinda feeling underrated, since her team transitioned her badly into streaming era coz even now, it still sounds fresh

I think it's too premature to call the commercial comparison for certain in either direction, especially given that both Showgirl and its lead single are now aiming for 10+ weeks at #1 with more potential hits like Opalite waiting in the wings, and given that it's had rather global success as well (see Ophelia's global streaming numbers for instance). Plus, who knows if this album might get a tour next year or something?

I actually think it's pretty interesting to compare Ophelia and Music (single) given that they came at roughly the same point in each artists' career in terms of both years and studio albums, were a 13th and 12th #1 hit respectively, and were globally successful hits and well-received critically. Sort of a testament to how enduring both artists have been.

I can give people "better," though, especially given that Music is one of Madonna's best and contains her best song and one of the best ever recorded by anyone (What It Feels Like for a Girl). I don't think people appreciated just how forward-thinking that album was at the time, given that it was a big success but didn't quite meet the commercial bar that albums like Ray of Light and Confessions did; it certainly did well enough but it's a bit under-appreciated relative to its quality.
