This was all Beyoncé's fault. She released black is king over a YEAR after the gift's album release (and well after the movie Lion King's release). The nerve of Miss Tina blaming Disney for not "promoting enough" when they covered all of Disney+ with banners for it and promoted it on all their social media, whereas the gift got one instagram post from Beyoncé

This should've been a lesson in striking while the iron is hot and that surprise releases don't work anymore, but 6 years later here we are

And if memory serves me right, I only knew of the album's existence from following Beylegion on Twitter. The album was not even spammed on her YouTube page until a month after release. Nor did she post about it until it flopped. What a weird woman.

Whatever we think about what she should or shouldn't have done, I think releasing it in 2020 ended up being absolutely correct. First of all, it wasn't even ready, or in production at the time of The Gift's release, but the political climate of Summer 2020 made it far more topical and pertinent than if it were released in 2019 and the fact that upon its release people had been quarantining for months and here Beyoncé was surprising us with a visual masterpiece, the likes of which no one else was releasing at that time due to the restrictions on the entertainment industry... it was its own kind of moment.

Ultimately, the film did give the album a nice little boost, and honestly I don't really even think if it had come out in the summer or fall of 2019 many people would have cared. They had already disregarded the album, and/or were confused about what it was.

I think if anything, this album should not have included the snippets from the movie and should have come out a month prior. Then, people could have understood and it as a separate, inspired work and not seen it as Disney-adjacent content.
