Why did Summer Walker fall off?

Featured Replies

Her debut album Over It marked the largest streaming week for an R&B album by a female artist, surpassing Lemonade, and moved 134k units.

Her sophomore album Still Over It broke the record again for the largest streaming week for a female R&B album, surpassing her own Over It, and moved 166k units.

Her third effort, Finally Over It, is projected to debut with significantly fewer units than her previous albums (59k to 63k units according to HDD) and her streaming numbers are looking BAD.

What went wrong? How and why did she fell off when she used to be the main R&B girl?

Wow I didn't realise she declined so hard, maybe the long break?

Not everyone can be like Sza and smash after a 4-5 year gap between albums.

The break hurt her and her albums usually perform based on great word of mouth. This has not had the similar fanfare so it makes sense

Long break + mediocre comeback, the material isn't fresh or exciting.. although Heart of a Woman is one of her best songs

question is why I flop the way I do....

Answer I may never find, but I'll always choose to :heart2:

The lead came out over a year ago and was a big urban hit. I think she dropped another song a few months ago with no push and then the album came out with basically no rollout or hype. Not sure why.

She felt just bigger when the second album came out in 2021, more people care to talk about her. I followed the conversation this time and it felt like she lost about 50% of what it was, and the debut number of the album confirm that.

because she took too long and killed her momentum. there were only 2 years between over it and still over it but 4 years between still over it and finally over it. the album should've dropped in 2023 tbh

heart of a woman was a moderate hit for her, but she waited over a year to drop the album, killing the momentum yet again.

The long gap, as has been mentioned hurt, I guess. There are some brilliant moments (1-800-Heartbreak for example), but the rest is uneven.

we live in a post-SOS world now and i think summer was just kinda the substitute while sza was inactive

rap and r&b have also been seeing a bit of a decline recently unfortunately

There was literally no hype around this release, no good promo. I will listen though and hopefully the album has legs 🔥

I could be wrong but she just seems like way more of a GP artist. She never really had a strong fandom like SZA's. The momentum naturally slowed down when she didn't release anything new for 3-4 years, and this album's rollout was way too quick to catch the GP's attention.

The album being terrible doesn't help. If it were good, word of mouth would carry it. The album feels dated already with all the featured artists.

And like other people, she released the first single a year ago. I honestly think she wasn't ready to release an an album. You can tell by all the features.

itʻs just not as good as her last two albums...

also, it seems quite clear to me that she does not care about any of this...itʻs a job for her.

1. She took too long, the single was a year early

2. She's barely excited about her own music

3. She's barely interested in her own career

4. What she made this time isn't that fresh/exciting

5. Way too many unnecessary, tacked-on features

6. The differences between the digital/physical versions are annoying

there WAS hype for this album but it was needed last year right after heart of a woman release. a rushed release a year after the lead single killed the momentum. and there was a fraction of the promo and campaigns done compared to still over it.

I didn't even realize her record-breaking 2nd album came out 4 years ago. I thought it was last year at most :rip:
