  • Japan needs to stop being an US colony and minds its own business.

  • The extreme left is just as bad as the extreme right. Taiwan and Japan are the logical side to support here, not the authoritarian China, which threatens Taiwan and cares even less about human rights,

when has Japan or the US empire ever been on the side of liberation? or do y'all still believe the US goes around spreading "freedom and democracy" abroad :rip:

china is on side of liberation? rip

I'm not sure what justification there is for supporting Chinese aggression on Taiwan specifically.

I am a fan of some of China's approaches to their domestic policy and their ability to have lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty. I am also a fan of how they haven't been quite as militarily aggressive as the US or Russia, and even Japan in their past.

And while I am certain that Japan is not acting out of the kindness of their hearts, just as the US isn't, ultimately I don't see why China should be supported at all in this instance.

Indeed, a majority of Taiwanese (60%) say Taiwan should maintain the status quo either permanently (34%) or for the time being while deciding on independence or unification based on future circumstances (26%). Twenty-seven percent prefer independence, either as soon as possible (5%) or in the future while maintaining the status quo for now (22%). Finally, 7 percent of Taiwanese prefer to seek unification, either as soon as possible (1%) or in the future while maintaining the status quo for now (6%).

Americans and Taiwanese Favor the Status Quo

The Taiwanese public expects more US aid in a potential conflict with China than Americans are willing to endorse.

From what I understand, most Taiwanese people support keeping the status quo as is, and more people support pursuing independence eventually or in the future than reuniting. China is threatening both of these options. If the people of Taiwan wanted to reunite, then they should be allowed to, but such a small percentage actually want toâ€Ķ so China should not be looking to aggress or posture in a way that would threaten Taiwan's current status.

I don't love how people support China as a foil to the US. Like I said, I am a huge fan of certain aspects of China and think that their method of operating domestically isn't as horrible as people try to make it seem (not without fault of course, nothing is perfect) but sometimes it feels like taking petty shots at the West than a logical and full-faith argument. Of course, China derangement syndrome is rampant in the US and on this site, but that's not an excuse to unconditionally support China. China can become as horrible as the US/Russia are, and we shouldn't just assume they won't. From my perspective, they've been doing foreign policy for their own benefit because keeping to yourself and focusing on your own country is pretty solid foreign policy on its own. That is, until you feel you can grab more, just as every superpower has in history.

I don't see why China would be an exception, and I don't think they should be treated as one. I wish there was a little more nuance from both sides of the argument here.

China remains absolute trash. Why would Taiwan want to be part of their corrupt nation and go to having absolutely no freedoms? shakeno

The way people support imperialism on this site as long as it's China rip All imperialism is bad and there's no justification for Chinese aggression towards Taiwan.

All of China's neighbouring countries hate their ass. It doesn't take a genius to figure out who's the bad guy here.

This false equivalency of trying to compare the horrific legacy of the British Empire subjugating and looting countries across the globe, or the long list of US interventions in South America and the Middle East, with China, whose main claim is an island that was historically theirs for centuries before Japan seized it along with a few minor border disputes, is exactly why so much of this veiled anti-China criticism cannot be taken seriously.

When did I compare it to the British empire? rip PRC trying to claim a country who want nothing to do with them and flying warplanes over Taiwan daily is not okay. It has nothing to do with the US or other western countries. Also let's not act as though the Chinese government has never imposed themselves on other regions (Tibet, Xinjiang etc)

Don't get me wrong, China is a beautiful country and its people are very nice (typical East Asians) contrary to the narratives but the Chinese government needs to chill ace

Taiwan was always apart of China, until Japan colonized it, and then later when Mao took over China, the KMT (fascist, authoritian group, backed by the US) flee and took over Taiwan, putting them under an authoritarian state. They were placed under Martial law since their take over, until very recently 1990s/2000s. They still hold major control over the country today.

To compare this to european imperialism is extremely ignorant. Unlike the terrorties europeans took over and enslaved, destroyed and mass extracted, Taiwan was originally always apart of China.

You say this while living under a country with massive blatant corruption. With a system that's only working to serve the wealthy. The US holds the biggest prison population, is currently deporting and holding "illegal" people. Those same people who had their countries destabilized by The US, extracting their countries resources under disguse of "democracy". You literally can't even criticize the president on national television, without that man throwing a tantrum and making some calls to get you fired. And let's not forget how the exposure of the genocide going on in Palestine and revealed how much little freedoms Americans actually do have.

Lol what are the border disputes are supposed to prove exactly? I bet you're not applying that same logic to the US, who is hated by their neighbors (lowkey rightfully so). And who is currently trying to invade Venezuela, all because they want to be able to control & extract their resources to their benefit. cm

I can acknowledge Canada is corrupt, while still acknowledging China is far more corrupt. michael China is not a role model nation by any means.

What are we going to see next - people defending Russia, Saudi Arabia, and UAE on here next? rip

So it's fine to bully and invade other territories just because other powerful countries are doing the same? What a ****** up logic and argument.

China is greedy and a bully, and nothing can justify that.

If all your neighbours hate you, it's simple and basic logic, you are THE problem!

So why did you dislike a post of mine bringing up China sending uyghur muslims to forced re-"education" camps? Those numbers don't get reported with their "incarcerations". 1 million + have been in these camps since 2016

Girl no one compared this to European imperialism except you. Taiwan was also not always part of China and actually has its own indigenous cultures.

This new prime minister is delusional.

if it was another prime minister who said that you would probably say otherwise and applaud the statements about all of it, but since it's a nationalist conservative prime minister it's reprehensible. The double standard here

I don't have a vested interest in either country, but shouldn't both be focusing on domestic issues and how to not go into rapid population decline?
