Japan and China beefing

Tokyo — Japan said Monday that it had scrambled aircraft after detecting a suspected Chinese drone near its southern island of Yonaguni, which is close to Taiwan, on Saturday, as tension between the Asian adversaries spiked.

On Sunday, Chinese coast guard vessels spent several hours in Japan's territorial waters around the disputed Senkaku Islands, known as the Diaoyu in China and a frequent flashpoint, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said.

The incidents came amid escalating tension between the neighbors over remarks by Japan's staunchly conservative new leader, who suggested Tokyo could intervene militarily in any hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan. Beijing insists Taiwan — which Japan occupied for decades until its 1945 defeat in World War II — is part of its territory, and the prime minister's comments have sparked outrage among Chinese officials.

Japanese leader's controversial remarks about China and Taiwan

Before taking power last month, Prime Minister Senae Takaichi, 64, was a vocal critic of China and its military build-up in the Asia-Pacific.

If a Taiwan emergency entails "battleships and the use of force, then that could constitute a situation threatening the survival (of Japan)," she told parliament on Nov. 7. Under Japan's self-imposed domestic rules, an existential threat is one of the few cases where it can act militarily. Taiwan sits around 60 miles from the nearest Japanese island.

In response to Takaichi's remarks, a Chinese diplomat stationed in Japan threatened to "cut off that dirty neck," apparently referring to Takaichi, as China and Japan summoned each other's ambassadors.

In Beijing, tech worker Daniel Feng called the Chinese government's responses "very restrained" given Takaichi's "extremely unreasonable" remarks.

"If she spouts words, that's not a problem ... but if they take real action, our country's military will definitely defeat them," the 40-year-old told AFP.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te called on Beijing on Monday to "show restraint, act like a major power, and not become the troublemaker" in the Asia-Pacific region, where peace and stability have been "severely impacted."

"China should return to the path of a rules-based international order, which would help maintain peace, stability and prosperity in the region," Lai told reporters.

Beijing, meanwhile, said Chinese premier Li Qiang had no plans to meet with Takaichi at the G20 summit in South Africa later this week, which they are both set to attend.

A Japanese government official told AFP that Masaaki Kanai, the top foreign ministry official for Asia-Pacific affairs, arrived in China on Monday.

"We are trying not to escalate the situation," the official told AFP.

Japan needs to stop being an US colony and minds its own business.

Japan will probably amend its constitution next year. In order to justify an actual "National Defence Force"

Things could get really bumpy in East Asia soon :rip: Regardless if Japan should mind its business or not. An invasion of Taiwan will be a catalyst for WW3.

How edgy :juanny:, Japan and Taiwan are allies and I'm sure the citizens of Taiwan, who want their independence, are thankful

no they better postpone this after my Japan trip in March

Did you not read the part where Japan occupied Taiwan until after WW2? So clearly Japan had an interest before the US ever did.

Our leaders hate each other so much... Why can't they just fight until death and leave us civilians out of it.

Of course, Japan and Taiwan are allies.

After Japan gave up control of Taiwan after WW2, the KMT (which was heavily backed by the US) fled China to Taiwan and established an authoritarian regime. For nearly 40 years, people in Taiwan lived under strict political repression and experienced civil rights violations.

Japan has essentially been a colony after their surrender in WW2. It's practically been functioning as a puppet state since then.

Nah it's not trying to be edgy, but about not being a clueless American who assumes they can speak for ETHNICALLY CHINESE people living in Taiwan - many of whom still remember what Japan did to their Chinese ancestors in WWII.

China is taking Taiwan eventually. They want that trade route BAD.

It won't initially set off ww3. Taiwan like Ukraine doesn't have an official military ally ship with us. It will be another proxy war like how we are helping Ukraine.

the only difference between china and Russia is we rely HEAVILY on their manfucturing and they rely (for now) heavily on his buying it but they are working on copying everything and making their own so their people don't buy out stuff so there's that. Eventually china won't need us economically and that's when they will strike and not care. It's ALL about and trade power. And with the tariffs it may push them faster.

why would they? as long as dumb concepts like patriotism and nationalism exist, they have no need to when the peasants will do the work for them.

the downvotes on our posts :rip: this site seriously needs to deprogram itself from American propaganda.

when has Japan or the US empire ever been on the side of liberation? or do y'all still believe the US goes around spreading "freedom and democracy" abroad :rip:

The fact that they believe being informed on this topic & recognizing who the real oppressor is, is being "edgy". Mind you these are the same people who scream about MAGA being stupid & anti-intellectual:rip:

Huh?

The extreme left is just as bad as the extreme right. Taiwan and Japan are the logical side to support here, not the authoritarian China, which threatens Taiwan and cares even less about human rights, freedom, and democracy than Trump. I'm getting really tired of how blind the left is to Russia and China just because they hate the West. I am glad to live in the West and would definitely defend our culture.

China cares less than human rights than the leader of an empire whos actively committing genocide, and currently threatening another country with invasion over their national resources :rip:

This whole idea that the "extreme left" is as bad as the extreme right is completely farce. One side believes in liberation, collective ownership and equality for all, while the far right is actually authoritarian, fascist and part takes in exclusionary policies, (i.e Nazis, KKK, White Supremacy, as a whole Israel as whole).

wait until you find out what china is doing with the Uyghurs

here's a hint: people who escaped their camps (yes, they're nice and rounded up in "education camps") reported "physical, mental and sexual torture", but I guess this didnt get enough retweets in your echo chamber

You might want to leave that part out next time unless you're aiming to sound like every other European far-righter / white supremacist.
