I have been seeing SO MUCH negativity on my Twitter and TikTok over TLOAS. 

 

I personally didn't like the album for the same reasons as the posts I'm seeing, so have liked the odd one or two. 
 

has my fyp picked up on this so is now just showing me hate tweets, or is the consensus really that bad?

 

cos I'm seeing some LASHINGS out there 

 

I haven't seen it like this for a MPG since Katy's witness era. But surely Taylor is too big to fail? 

 

(this isn't shade, I'm genuinely curious as I don't think we've seen backlash like this for a star this big in… ever)

i don't feel like it's any more than what i saw around TTPD release  she's arguably at the peak of her celebrity, and with more eyes comes more hate

No i think it's waaaaaaay worse this time around, for real. Like it's all over my socials and it includes accounts that have previously ADORED Taylor. 
 

personally it feels very different to ttpd.  Anyway, we all know how the internet works so this will be old news by Friday. 

Yes! I've never searched or followed anything Taylor swift related like I go out of my way to hear her or see her fans on my socials yet I've been gettigg by so many tik toks, tweets and reels heavily hating on the album lol 

 

I think it was inevitable given how overexposed she is. The smart thing would've been to take a hiatus after the tour ended. 
 

people are just sick of her being everywhere and the album being so extraordinarily bad doesn't help her.

Haters are always looking for viral tweets. She's still selling massively and the movie parties did well enough. We will have to see if the locals keep streaming this era though since it's more pop. The Swifties themselves are more mixed than normal but the locals might be eating it up since it's pop. TTPD didn't have a hit with staying power. I question Ophelia but I could see Opalite being her next Karma esque hit.

It is pretty big. The Swifties will make it seem like it's "just Twitter" or "just social media" but it's actual people and millions of them calling her out for the output. I've seen drags and critique that no amount of commercial success will save. This is how Katy Perry was laughed at when she was successful. 

I think it's mix of algorithm but also I feel some Swifties are not being as defensive this time as they were for previous albums (?)

 

If you look on Twitter and TikTok there are also posts and videos with over hundreds of likes that are in favor of the album or lyrics (like comparing Taylor's Actually Romantic to Kendrick's Not Like Us) but they probably weren't seen amongst all the backlash.

The Grammys sure did. TTPD lost out on so many awards because the Grammy committee didn't want to lose their credibility and same could happen here. The hate may not transcend into commercial territory but it will transcend into critical. 

If you dislike Taylor but keep tabs on her, the algorithm will pick up on it and show you posts and vids that lash on her. If you watch one video or like to a tweet that lash Taylor, you will be shown similar tweets and videos.

 

My algorithm is the complete opposite with people loving the album. Each of us get shown things that apply to our own little world, and this applies to traditional media as well, you would hear about articles on how 'terrible' the album is instead of the ones that love the album.

 

If objectives figures such as streams, sales, radio spins, etc starts dropping for Taylor, then you will know her backlash era is here.

The Life of a Shroomer bashing will not be tolerated under my watch. 
It's her best album.

Honestly same I've never followed Taylor like that either yet there news of her new album good and bad everywhere and even the comments are skull dragging her as fighting with fans. Literally the only exception is rolling stone.

hopefully that pushes taylor to do something new, since she's the one who really cares about critics and awards.

She's so big that everything she puts out instantly gets massive reactions (both positive and negative) across the board, a lot of which is from people who don't engage with her music otherwise. Entirely normal for her insane level of fame.

I've been seeing a LOTTTTT of panning on social media. People were roasting Tortured Poets too, but not to this extent (from what I saw).

 

I'm sure the album will be successful anyway and social media doesn't necessarily represent the real world, but I definitely think a lot of people are tired of her

I mean I do see a lot of panning but I think it's lowkey falling into mass-gaslighting / bandwagon hate territory cause it's simply not as bad as people make it out to be. Did the album truly reach it's goal thematically and is it her best album? Well no. But pretending it's some sort of crisis is diabolical. If you don't like this album she has ELEVEN (!!!!!!!!!!!) other albums you can listen to. It's not the end of the world.mp3

It happens every era, but there are WAY more normies who usually don't have much of an opinion on her chiming in on social media about how tone-deaf and greedy her entire marketing strategies are.

People aren't criticizing the album as much as they are criticizing her for the variants and the hypercapitalistic tactics

See this is why I'm asking, because you're right - social media can become an echo chamber when you engage with content of a similar point of view 

 

what you're wrong about is me being someone who dislikes Taylor. While I don't stan her I do really enjoy Folklore, Red, and 1989, and most of Speak Now and Midnights too. I will have liked/saved much more pro-Taylor content overall than the few negative posts I've interacted with this weekend. But my feed is all so negative.
 

I suppose I'm looking for an indication of whenever the backlash is really as bad as it seems (which from looking at other posts in this thread, it is) or if algorithms can do a 180 so quickly based on a couple outlier likes

I mean that's flawed logic. 

 

Objectively, the album is getting quite panned whether it be through traditional media or social media. It's at less than 50 on AOTY for a reason. 

Its a bit different this time around from what i have observed.

 

Because the fans arent defending as hard as usual because they are a bit dissapointed too

 

Also shes at her peak so everything is amplified.

it's just yr algorithm, the album's massive : )

 

i think there's a sense that she might be past her peak a little which is causing haters to pile in now but she's still very good and that's still clearly enough to shift huge numbers of albums

Don't listen to him. If something is mega-viral it will be on most people's FYP. That's part of what keeps monoculture intact and not completely obsolete because major events are on everyone's news feed regardless if you're a fan or not. 

 

It's getting panned and it's gone viral because it's a bad album from an artist with four AOTY wins under her belt and one that is on top. It's newsworthy and also well-deserved.
