It feels like we went through a period of poptimism from the pandemic onwards but for some reason it feels like this year has been the end of that period. Do you agree and what do you think is the reason?

Yeah. I think Taylormania may have overloaded it but not kill it per se. From 20-18/9-2020 onwards was pop domination with 2024 reaching a fever pitch. We're seeing a shift with country, "rock" and blue eyed soul ruling the charts. I predict we are gonna get a wave of AC (Die With A Smile) and RNB (Kehlani and Mariah The Scientist crossing over) ballads coming at the end of the decade into the next with an RNB dominant cultural and chart wave.

That is the worst part of the poptimism era. There are so many generic bland pop albums over the last 8-10 years that have 80+ metacritic scores. Before 2015 they would've never gotten above 70.

Nah. Poptimism is in full effect. Mayhem was the last main pop girl album released and got an 80+, even though it's a mediocre mess that doesn't deserve that score.

 

But some girls are releasing albums so bad that not even poptimism can save them. TTPD is a clear example of an album being terrible and rightfully panned.

It's evening out. I think that there was a period where it went too far in one direction and some pretty basic, mid, unremarkable, etc. albums got acclaimed because of the commercial success of the artist. Pop albums are still getting acclaimed, it's just not as overly generous, which is a good thing. 

 

As to why pop music is flopping on the charts... consumption behavior is changing (ie. catalog streams) and the only resonate answer pop has had to what's going on in America is to pander to it. Everything is up in flames, everyone's moody and on edge, and things feel relatively hopeless. Doesn't help that everyone released last year.

Part of 'poptimism' was also due to critics being afraid to offend artists with large fanbases, and I'm yet to see any evidence that's gone.

Honestly, Mayhem wasn't very cohesive but Gaga's never made a bad album per say..maybe Joanne…maybe Artpop..but Mayhem is pretty decent all things considered
