Anecdotally I have heard people say they listen to music much less nowadays and just spend that time scrolling TikToks, maybe playing a podcast or stream.

 

Is music over? Are we all paying attention to a flop artistic medium that holds little cultural relevance anymore?

Music will never be "over" but honestly the charts seem to be.  They just seem completely irrelevant at this point, especially with all the rule changes because of streaming.  It all just feel so cheap and undignified at this point.

The world has moved on from EDM pop bangers taking up the charts. 

at least drake is barely scraping the top 10 now, lets celebrate that!

Not quite. 

I mostly listen to pre 2015 songs now. New music just doesn't hit 

music consumption has changed a lot over the years and also 2025 has just been a pretty weak year for music

They need to completely get rid of radio from the formula, it keeps songs like Lose Control in the Top 10 for WAY too long. No one under 30 even listens to FM radio, and people over 30 don't listen to it nearly as much as they used to now that every car has Bluetooth/aux/some way to play your own media.

 

Also, it's been noted that catalog (older songs) have been outselling and out-streaming new songs since 2021, so I guess the general public just isn't super enthused with what the labels have been payola'ing this decade.

No it's just that there are no massive crossover hits right now. We have 100 mildly popular songs instead of 70 moderate hits + 20 big hits + 7 smashes + 3 tera hits

Honestly, it's been on life support for a while now, especially when you take into consideration how hits from last year charted throughout the Q1 and Q2 of 2025 whilst some songs from major artists released this year barely charted for a full month.

 

This time around last year we were experiencing the brat era in real time, while The Bar Song was on the verge of hitting number one on the BB100. We also had Sabrina and Chappell making noise with their releases, and their music is STILL charting within the top 40 from last year... currently.

 

It's crazy how 2024 carried over into 2025, and we're still listening to music released last year—and from years earlier, for that matter. 

 

I don't know why the music industry stagnated this year, but it's very apparent and bizarre. 

It kinda is... it's not hitting like it used to and it's so generic and disposable.
