is vote splitting real in Grammys?

Featured Replies

usually if the male is competing with bunch of females of the same genre

or if the lone genre especially if its country is competing with those in the same genre

they get to win the general field

Example a Bonnie song winning over a gigantic Adele song

which winners are the best examples?

We can't get confirmation unless the grammy's released all the data, but it seems very likely that's what happened for SOTY, ROTY, & AOTY.

Brat, HMHAS, S&S, TRAFOAMP, CC and even TTPD all had a strong argument to win. There was no clear standout among those, they were all extremely successful, extremely acclaimed or in some cases, both. I can imagine Grammys voters struggling to center on one, so it makes sense Bey could snatch this year with a country album that also appeals to R&B fans as well, and the immense respect she has from the pop field. She had the coalition to win.

Meanwhile Brat, S&S, TTPD, HMHAS and TRAFOAMP all had to fight over the same voters.

Same goes for Kendrick in ROTY/SOTY.

One of the many examples, the solid country vote made a country song beat the biggest comeback hit 10 weeks #1 for SOTY in 2022

It's obviously a factor with the current voting system.

Single transferable vote system would be fairer

How does that work?

Seems like it, it's simple math

It's effectively a ranking system. If there are five options, you rank them from 1-5. The votes are then tallied. The artist with the fewest first preferences is eliminated. Those are reallocated to the second preferences.

The process repeats until one artist has over 50% of the votes.

It would more accurately reflect the preferences of the voting membership

Yeah, the AOTY category kind of resemble 2010 too with a lot of huge pop albums and no one but one (Fearless) collecting the country votes.

This is why cross genre appeal is important.

The sad part about vote splitting is if a genre has a moment in any year and has a number of successful songs or albums, that genre is less likely to actually have a winner.

They need to cut down to 6 nominees max. More nominees the less votes you need to snatch the win.

There's no way around it when there are 2+ artists who appeal to the same voter

I don't know how accurate that would be, since most of the time albums would win even if they weren't the first choice for the majority of the voters. I don't know how to explain it, but an album that has 40% first choice votes in the first round could eventually lose to an album that was one of the least favorite choices in the first round. Sometimes it would be accurate, but most of the times it wouldn't

I agree.  But part of the issue with that is, the less nominees, the more likely that "snubs" will happen.

I think if instead of a ranked choice system they implement a reverse point system, it might do a better job at tackling to problem you note.  Because I agree that the winner should have a good amount of people putting it first.  But it should also have a general consensus by having a lot of people putting it high on their list and the vote system should reflect both needs.

yes vote splitting is very real and that is why Beyonce was finally able to win this year.   Same story for Kendrick. :katie2:

yes tell your fave to make a good country album, they've been winning AOTY for the longest time now

There have been 2 country winners the last decade while there have been 6 pop winners.  Making a good pop album still seems like the way to go.

this

why dont they do the rank based voting

the one with the most 1st ranks should win

If you only did this you would still get vote splitting.  You need a way for people to both express the one they feel most passionate for but also their 2nd and 3rd choices.  This is why I suggest a reverse point system.  I would do something like:

1 - 10 points

2- 7 points

3- 5 points

4 - 4 points

5- 3 points

6 - 2 points

7 - 1 point

8+ - 0 points

This way you reward the music people feel the most passionate about but you don't get the all or nothing phenomenon that creates vote splitting.
