Kpop is not a zero sum game

It quite literally is. The industry has declined and groups are competing for a piece of a shrinking market. The more groups that enter that competitive landscape, the smaller each individual piece will be. This isn't even purely theoretical either, 4th gen representatives have worse stats than their predecessors.

In the previous sentence you admitted the similarities. You're not arguing in good faith here, not one bit. :psyduck:

having influences from the biggest kpop debut in a decade does not amount to plagiarism. having some similar concept photos and styling isnt plagiarism. words have meaning you know :gaycat6:

They sure do :suburban:

For example: By hiring Min Heejin and only keeping her around long enough to steal her ideas, ensuring she wouldn't profit off of them or receive credit, piggy bang committed plagiarism.

These dishonest arguments might successfully confuse 12 year olds in tiktok comments but they won't ever work among grown, educated men unless that one user decides to start hating NJZ. :suburban:

The verses suck but the hook and chorus are 10/10. If they added a dance break/bridge and followed it with a chorus full of ad-libs, it would have been a great song.

Actually, 4th gen is significantly bigger than 3rd gen.

Aespa > Red Velvet

BabyMonster & LSF & NJ > BP

ITZY & NMIXX & IVE > TWICE

G-IDLE & KISS of Life & I*ZONE > All other 3rd gen groups

It's not even close. While 4th gen boy groups lag because they can't get hits and 3rd gen had like six SM boy groups, 4th gen has Stray Kidz, TXT, ENHYPEN & RIIZE.

This is assuming you're comparing successors within a company. I was meaning BTS shits on SKZ, aespa won't ever close the streaming gap with bp, etc

You can argue that sublabels (ADOR/BELIFT) should not be allowed (by HYBE) to have girl groups that have potentially conflicting concepts with similar market appeal. I personally don't agree with that since everyone in this insular, trend hopping industry is influenced by each other to some degree and Kpop is not a zero sum game.

You don't have to insist on these bogus plagiarism claims that still nobody here or in court can actually substantiate

The thing is, it's one thing to take inspiration and that can be so well done. In Britney's Overprotected (Darkchild Remix), she goes to the same hotel as Janet's Son of a Gun and does her best to show Janet's inspiration in a way that makes Janet's legacy pops and shows Britney's inspiration from the legend that is Janet.

In another scenario, Katseye and &Team didn't come up with their concepts - their record label from HYBE did. Their record label HYBE was caught trying to "stomp on Aespa." Then &Team blatantly put out a music video that was blatantly plagiarizing Aespa's Drama. Afterwards, HYBE plagiarized Drama again in Katseye's Gnarly. Neither Katseye nor &Team ever said anything positive nor uplifting about Aespa nor did they mention the influence.

Do you see the difference? How not citing your source turns a reference into a copyright lawsuit?

Aespa can't ever close the gap in streaming because global streaming is manipulated by autoplay. YG does Spotify autoplay and YouTube payola, which SM doesn't do. In terms of album sales:

Album Sales:

TWICE - 13,835,537 Korean / 4,146,991 Japan

IVE - 10,464,401 Korean / 498,239 Japan

Aespa - 8,757,524 Korean / 153,828 Japan

NewJeans - 8,421,068 Korean

BlackPink - 6,639,468 Korean / 223,739 Japan

SM definitely started taking Spotify seriously after the kakao debacle. I agree that BP is propped up by fraudulent activity but that fraud translates into real success off of the hype it generates. Nobody batted an eye at APT being the biggest global kpop hit since GS. It would be extremely shocking if aespa was doing the same in 4 years time. I'm literally an anti of one of these groups and a stan of the other as well.

But everyone knows Spotify is all fraud. Taylor Swift at her peak, in her most successful singles era, was bombing on Spotify (1989). But when she switched to Republic who deals with Spotify payola in terms of extreme playlisting and Discovery Mode, she suddenly had record-breaking success.

Like congrats to YG, but YG was a company known for fraud on domestic digital charts. Obviously they're going to do better there than companies that don't commit fraud.

Are we really about to relitigate the gaon downloads that equally benefitted the whole industry? I feel like we've done this 20 times at this point.  :deadbanana4:

2NE1 just sold out a bigger tour than their peers and GD took a decade off and came back to record breaking success, something not even acts like Michael Jackson could manage in their home market. The point of charts is weighing relative success and as EVERY saved song counted as a "sale"(it did) and not just YG acts, it doesn't diminish how they were far and away the biggest singles acts of their era.

One in 4 songs in Korea's top 20 is by G-Dragon right now and he's literally signed to one of those solo idol agencies. His "company" is owned by his nft/ai tech bro partners and has no pull on the Korean entertainment industry.

Not to diminish the other great talents like Taeyeon, Jonghyun, IU, etc(all of whom I stan as well), but YGs domestic power makes a lot of sense once you realize that they got lucky with GD and CL being 2 of the greatest entertainers of a generation not just in Korea but anywhere on earth, then used the profits from those lucky successes to buy other immense talents like Psy and Tablo, then rode that hype to lure other talented artists through their reputation like AKMU and Lee Hi. Peak YG was the most stacked record label roster since Motown and unlike their other kpop competitors, the artists were the ones driving the musical quality so they were less constrained by sharing certain resources. When one act took the Teddy summer smash slot, the others were ready with an excellent ballad or melodic pop track that they self-penned.

I agree about what you said about Stray Kids but to say BabyMonster, LSF and NJ are bigger than BP is factually false. Also NMIXX bigger than Twice? Anyeon!
