So UDTT is a 5 member gg but one of their members left pre-debut but it was really last minute so when they filmed their debut MV the new 5th member filmed with a mask on bc she wasn't fully prepared I guess lol but she's performing now without the mask lmfaoo

Hopefully this board's collapse function on quoted posts is working correctly because I just want to say this is obviously some weird attempt at k-style viral marketing by this entity.  And it's obvious because of the name they gave to this girl group.

 

Stream the more traditional form or notoriety building instead.

I actually think Gnarly works The problem with these "I'm the ****"-style songs is usually that a.) the performer can't carry them, so it's unconvincing, b.) it's just musically not good, and c.) there's nothing less edgy or cool than trying to look and sound edgy or cool. 

 

IMO, Gnarly has none of those problems cause a.) Katseye are very charismatic, b.) there's a good mix of cacophony and more traditional rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic elements, and c.) the song is not trying to be edgy or cool, it's trying to be ridiculous and over-the-top. It doesn't come off as try-hard so much as it comes off as intensely camp, tongue-in-cheek, and a little bit silly. The delivery, the nonsense lyrics, etc., the whole vibe is both embracing the noisy, braggadocious, "I'm the ****" movement in pop/rap while simultaneously satirizing it. 

 

I don't think it's some layered artistic masterpiece or anything, and frankly 2 minutes is crazy, but I do think it's a really ambitious and kind of high-concept song that's understandably divisive. A wildly unexpected release tbh. Like if they're going for mainstream global appeal this is a crazy direction to go in. The MV is unobjectionably great though.

I like how open, honest and self aware they are in general, which is refreshing to see in Kpop  This TikTok was also pre-recorded a few days ago, which means that they knew how people would react to Gnarly
