'Reputation' turns 7

Featured Replies

Released on November 10, 2017, the album debuted at #1 with a shattering 1,238,000; 1,216,000 of which were pure sales; and is still charting to this day, currently in its 319th week at #48 on the Billboard 200. Following the blockbuster 1989, it became her fourth US million-seller in its first week. As of January 2024, it stands at nearly 2.5m copies in the US. Thoughts on it today?

To me personally, the era was a mixed bag, containing some of her highest (LWYMMD, New Year's Day, Delicate, DBM) and lowest points (Getaway Car, End Game, CIWYW).

Wait, you think Call it what you want is one of her weaker songs?

Yes. And I also love Gorgeous.

I revisited it for the first time in years on Wednesday and it feels like this album set the precedent for Midnights and TTPD. It's a lot stronger than those two because it does not wallow in self-pity nearly as much, and because the production is a lot more interesting. The album seems to have two main modes: invincibility (...Ready For It?, End Game, I Did Something Bad, Don't Blame Me, Look What You Made Me Do, So It Goes..., This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things) where the production is more aggressive and the lyrics more assertive and about her persona, and intimacy (Delicate, Gorgeous, King of My Heart, Dancing With Our Hands Tied, Dress, Call It What You Want, New Year's Day) where the production is softer and the concepts revolving more around her self-perception and her blossoming romance with Joe Alwyn. Getaway Car is kind of in the middle of both lanes.

Pretty good album overall even with a few misses and some mid-2010s production choices (the drop in I Did Something Bad, for instance, or the skittering 808s in This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things). Very nice closer in the form of New Year's Day.

1.2m pure sales is ******* insane. I wondered why the 22k streaming units. But this wasn't on Spotify and maybe apple music too? at the time of release

It came on Spotify 3 weeks after release. The first week SEA units came from the streams earned by Look What You Made Me Do, ...Ready For It?, Gorgeous, and Call It What You Want. I remember there was a time Taylor was predicted to do 2 million with Reputation, which is probably why the label kept off streaming initially. Ultimately I think that was a bad play, they could've had huge streaming numbers and still gotten the million pure sales had they gone for immediate streaming availability.

When it came to streaming, the album moved 42,000 SEA units (and I think the album had the biggest first day for a female artist on Spotify at the time, surpassing Ariana Grande's Dangerous Women before being passed a month later by Camila Cabello's Camila).
