What if I told you I was never crazy about Preacher's Daughter nnn

 

I found Ethel in 2021 and was gagged by Michelle Pfeiffer/Crush (two of my top songs this decade honestly.) Then I loved Gibson Girl from PD but the rest of the album just kind of whelmed me.

 

I do actually listen to a lot of ambient and lo-fi music (I mentioned Grouper's Dragging A Dead Deer album earlier) and sometimes horror film scores while I work, so I wasn't forcing myself to like it. This project wasn't as glaringly different to me as it might've been to a stan who just liked American Teenager and Strangers   I'll give you that Pulldrone is a bit too much of just atonal machine sounds. But overall I like the sinister ambience she went for here, and I think to capture what she was going for you just have to go into it knowing you're digesting a different kind of project than a typical vocal heavy album, but then again maybe it's just not your taste? Which is fine

I like the album and I listen to Pink Friday 2 as well, so one may say I like horror music.

The album is NICE, but calling it groundbreaking or genius is a little too much. 

 

I LOOOOVE listening to ambiant music (or drone music I guess, learned that term yesterday). The goal of having these long song lengths is to slowly build to something or it's because the melody is so haunting/beautiful that it deserves to be repeated. HOWEVER, on this album, there were a few times when the songs were just too long with no melody and nothing to to build. Thus the journey was boring and the destination was just not even there.

Perverts : TOO LONG. This song is haunting but when I can predict what's going to happen next, it inevitably looses its scary aura. However, the last 4 minutes are amazing as an intro and I will probably cut the song to that point. 

Punish : Amazing, now that's great ambiant music. It's haunting, beautiful and the build up is worth it. 

Houseofpsychoticwomn : TOO LONG for its own good. I like the atmosphere it creates tho, I will probably shorten the track.

Vacillator : Beautiful. 

Onatist : Best song with alongside Punishe, so stunning and haunting 

Pulldrone : Once again, WAY TOO LONG. Having the monologue + all the haunting sounds right after on a 5 minutes track could have been great. 

Etienne : A little too long, but it's beautiful so it can pull it off actually. 

Thatorchia : Love this. It's the kind of song that really resets your mind and help you concentrate. It's beautiful, haunting, it has variety and the end is nice.

Amber Waves : Obviously the most accessible song here. It's very beautiful, she doesn't miss when she has melodies sdfgh

 

I will probably make an edited version with : Perverts (the last 4 minutes), Punish, Vacillator, Onatist, Etienne, Thatorchia, Amber Waves and For Sure.

why so many people on this thread that seem to be angry or bitter at other people enjoying the EP?  talm'bout "insufferable" while typing paragraphs on "cringey people pretending to like it", "tiktok stans" or whatever any of that means anyway lol.

 

I haven't seen a single fake reaction. There's even a reddit post titled "Honest opinions on Perverts". I can see some twitter stan accounts posting that "yasss thank you Ethel for taking away the fake fans!!1!!1" bullshit but that's about it. I have seen comments on how they hated it or how they were expecting something like PD (as some users posted here) which I find very honest.

 

Also calling her pretentious, extra, cringe etc for allegedly releasing this type of music just to be edgy and create a narrative of superiority complex… yikes nnnn can you let people enjoy whatever they like doing.. not everyone is -only- into pop divas or derivatives or radio friendly music whatever the genre.

I would advise you to the start off with Angel Olsen's catalogue and work forwards. It will be a bit bleak in places but it will have melody.

 

If you want to stay in an equally uncommercial space that is mellow and melodic I would also consider Marissa Nadler, Aldous Harding, Jessica Pratt, Agnes Obel, Julianna Barwick with Susanne Sundfor bridging the gap  that leads back to the centre ground that meets a commercial space.

I trust her vision completely and she made all the process for this very clear, so I don't understand these hot takes when this is still 100% her.

 

Punish is still incredible but the title track and houseofpsychoticwomn are way too long and that made me didn't care about both, although the ending of both songs are really good.

 

Vacillator and Pulldrone tho ugh what a ride this is where the album start to sink its claws in you, both creepy magnetic songs.

 

Although Etienne was nice and "softer", Onanist, Thatorchia and Amber Waves were my top 3, it made such a good conclusion.

 

Of course this is not an easy listen and something to be in repeat all the time but once you're in the right mood for it, it hits harder and deeper. This is actually my introduction to drone music as it's something I never explored before but I'm glad it was with a project from Hayden, that's why I love her and trust her with my life.

Listened to the entire project last night on a walk and it was such an amazing experience

I just hide the  pure noise tracks from Spotify and was left with for 4 songs

Yeah. I love PD, this is disappointing.

I was still trying to believe in this album and get in to some kind of flow state when she said something like "I can make you cum 20 times a day" and at that point I thought, okay - I'm going to see this listening experience through but this is not the ye olde worlde cosplay or deep body of work I was expecting - I was at least expecting musicianship.

Yeah this ain't it, ma. I love experimental and passion projects but this is just long and unnecessary for no reason. Hopefully she made the point she was trying to make. I hate tik tok as much as the next person but it's petty to punish people for….liking your music. 

 

The songs where she was actually singing I enjoyed but i'm not gonna delude myself into liking the instrumental tracks. Maybe one day it'll stick but….

Admittedly, this is not a genre I am familiar with, but I wanted to give it a chance for her. I might go see what else she's said about this project to give me a better perspective. Some of the more industrial sounds seemed a bit at odds with the more natural, spiritual/religious language. It created an interesting tension, but I don't know if they really worked together. Some of the lyrics also weren't so impactful for me. Mostly on Pulldrone, where the numbered passages were a little short and clunky while also using some flowery language that again was not really enhanced by the almost technological textures. I also agree with others that a few songs didn't really justify their extended song lengths. Other than that, I really enjoyed the variety of sounds on the project. Vacillator is my absolute favorite. She would make an AMAZING slowcore album a la Low. 

I have nothing against ambient music. But this was boring, pretentious, and sloppy. 
 

To the actual fans of this style of music, we appreciate your insights! Sounds like it was mid even for that community but you appreciate Ethel drawing attention to the space. 
 

for the girls doing backbends to try to like this…I hope you stretched first.

any criticism of this album I've seen online across Tiktok, Twitter and RYM is instantly met with bs like "this isn't for you, go back to Sabrina Carpenter" "you just don't have the intellectual capacity for this" "Ethel isn't a POP artist why would you expect a pop album" "this is real ART sorry Tiktok has ruined your attention spam" like it's all very cringey and pretentious, even people saying they're disappointed are met with hostility at least on tiktok of all place it's very weird

 

I mean look no further than this thread alone and even your comment at the end acting like you're either into basic pop divas or 15m spoken word drone music

 

people freaking out over 12 minutes of nothing where she says masturbator over and over acting like it's the peak of modern music will come off pretentious no matter what
